Description

The 2019 Domaine Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru in magnum format is a commanding expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted white wine vineyards. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay and drawn from the heart of the Côte de Beaune, this Grand Cru combines power, precision, and luxurious texture in a format ideal for cellaring and special occasions. The magnum bottling enhances its aging potential, allowing the wine’s intricate layers to evolve slowly and harmoniously over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2019 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a luminous, pale gold hue with subtle green reflections hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is complex and refined, opening with notes of lemon zest, white peach, and pear, followed by layers of acacia blossom, almond, fresh butter, and delicate brioche. With air, more nuanced aromas of crushed chalk, hazelnut, and a touch of honeyed citrus emerge, underscoring its Grand Cru pedigree. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and poised: a silky, generous texture is balanced by a finely etched, mineral-driven acidity. Flavors of ripe stone fruit, Meyer lemon, and crisp apple intertwine with nuances of toasted hazelnut, subtle spice, and a saline, chalky finish that lingers with great persistence. The structure and concentration are impressive, showing the depth typical of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet while maintaining remarkable finesse. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will reward patience over 10–20+ years, gaining further complexity, richness, and tertiary notes of honey, brioche, and dried flowers as it matures.

Production
Domaine Faiveley’s Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from one of the most hallowed terroirs in the Côte de Beaune, characterized by limestone-rich soils with clay and fine gravel that deliver both tension and depth to the Chardonnay. The Grand Cru vineyard sits at the base of the slope, benefiting from optimal exposure and excellent drainage, which help achieve perfect ripeness while preserving freshness. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates at optimal maturity, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification focuses on precision and elegance: the must is gently pressed and then fermented in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The wine is aged on fine lees, with measured bâtonnage depending on the character of the vintage, and is matured for an extended period before bottling to allow the elements to knit together. The magnum format further protects the wine, encouraging slow, graceful development in the cellar.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru white Burgundy is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with lobster in butter or a light cream sauce, scallops, turbot or sole, and delicately prepared white fish. It also shines alongside roast chicken with morel mushrooms, veal in a light jus, or luxurious dishes like truffled poultry and creamy risottos. Aged Comté, Beaufort, or mild, high-quality cow’s milk cheeses also work exceptionally well. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves without losing freshness. In its youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes can help the wine open and reveal its layered complexity; for well-aged bottles, decant gently, if at all, mainly to separate from any sediment and to avoid overexposing the wine to air.

Producer
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected family-owned domaines, with deep roots in both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and an extensive collection of prestigious vineyard holdings, including numerous Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites. Over generations, the Faiveley family has invested heavily in both vineyard quality and modern yet sensitive winemaking, transitioning to more precise, terroir-driven styles in recent decades. Their white Grand Crus from the Côte de Beaune, such as Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, are considered benchmarks for power, purity, and longevity. Today, Domaine Faiveley stands as a key reference for Burgundy, consistently earning high critical acclaim and playing a significant role in defining the region’s contemporary fine wine identity.
