Description

The 2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a powerful yet finely etched expression of one of Burgundy’s most storied vineyards. Sourced from old vines in the upper reaches of Clos Vougeot, right beside the historic château, it combines depth and structure with remarkable finesse. The 2019 vintage at Domaine d'Eugénie saw increased use of whole clusters, bringing extra aromatic lift and complexity to this already distinguished Grand Cru.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red hue with brilliant clarity, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is elegant and layered, opening with pure red and black cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, then unfolding to notes of violet, rose petal, sweet spices, and a touch of forest floor and graphite. Subtle hints of cedar, crushed herbs and fine oak spice add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, with a core of ripe yet precise Pinot Noir fruit carried by juicy, refreshing acidity. The mid-palate is beautifully textured: rich but never heavy, with satin-like tannins that feel both firm and refined. Flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and plum mingle with savoury undertones of sous-bois, dark cocoa and a mineral, chalky edge from the limestone soils. The finish is long, well-defined and persistent, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable in youth with proper aeration, this 2019 will reward patience and should evolve gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining further aromatic nuance and tertiary complexity.

Production
Domaine d'Eugénie’s 1.37-hectare holding in Clos Vougeot lies in the coveted upper part of the climat, adjacent to the château, where the slope, drainage and exposure are particularly favourable. The roughly 60-year-old Pinot Noir vines delve deep into a mosaic of clay and limestone, with finer clay-silt in the deeper subsoils, contributing both power and mineral tension to the wine. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with strict selection of bunches to retain only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit. In 2019, the estate employed a higher proportion of whole clusters than in previous years, enhancing aromatic complexity, structure and freshness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new) to refine the tannins and integrate the wine’s natural richness without overshadowing its terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a superb match for refined, flavourful dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, rack of lamb with herbs, or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, and mature, earthy cheeses like aged Comté or Époisses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and textural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to separate any sediment and preserve delicate aromas.

Producer
Domaine d'Eugénie is a relatively young but already highly respected name in Vosne-Romanée, established in 2006 when François Pinault (owner of Château Latour in Bordeaux) acquired the historic holdings of Domaine René Engel. From the outset, the domaine has focused on meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking to express some of Burgundy’s most coveted terroirs, including Grands Crus such as Clos Vougeot, Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux. Within the Côte de Nuits, Domaine d'Eugénie has quickly earned a reputation for wines that balance intensity with elegance, regularly achieving high critical scores and becoming a sought-after reference for refined, contemporary Burgundy rooted in classic tradition.
