Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 XXL shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely expressive yet finely detailed, with layers of ripe red and black fruits—kirsch, black cherry and blackberry compote—interwoven with notes of garrigue (wild thyme, rosemary and lavender), crushed violets, licorice, cracked black pepper and a subtle smoky/mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and opulent, but impeccably balanced by a vibrant line of freshness. The texture is plush and velvety, with silk-smooth yet firmly structured tannins that carry the palate through to an exceptionally long, resonant finish. Flavors echo the nose—ripe dark berries, sweet spice, pepper and dried herbs—unfolding in complex layers as the wine opens in the glass. While already compelling in its youth, the 2019 XXL is built for the long haul: it will benefit from 4–5 years of cellaring and, under proper conditions, has the potential to evolve gracefully for up to 30 years.

Production
Domaine de la Janasse sources the fruit for XXL from some of its best parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including old-vine Grenache rooted in classic Rhône terroirs of sand, clay and scattered galets roulés (rounded river stones). These well-drained, sun-drenched sites naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with only about 30% of the bunches destemmed to retain some whole clusters for additional aromatic complexity and structure. Fermentation takes place with careful temperature control and gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse despite the wine’s power. Aging is carried out exclusively in demi-muids (600-liter barrels), a choice that offers subtle oak influence and allows the XXL cuvée to develop texture, harmony and depth without overwhelming its vibrant fruit and terroir character.

This is a commanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape that shines alongside rich, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye with peppercorn sauce, duck confit, venison, or hearty Provençal stews. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and mature, hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol. In its youth, a generous decant of 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfurl; older bottles (15+ years) will benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant to separate sediment while preserving evolved aromatics.
