Description
The 2019 Château Valandraud Bordeaux Blanc is a richly textured, characterful white that shows just how exciting dry Bordeaux can be. Bursting with ripe fruit, lifted aromatics and serious structure, it offers both immediate pleasure and the promise of rewarding development in bottle. Coming from the visionary team behind one of Saint-Émilion’s most acclaimed estates, this is a white with true Grand Vin ambition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Valandraud Blanc shines a bright, luminous straw-gold, hinting at both ripeness and concentration. The nose is expressive and inviting, with layers of pineapple, green apple and citrus peel interwoven with ginger, fresh mint and delicate white flowers.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet precise, with a striking sense of structural intensity. Ripe tropical and orchard fruits are framed by a vibrant line of acidity and a subtle, refined oak touch that adds creaminess and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Notes of pineapple, pear, green apple and lemon curd are joined by nuances of ginger, mint and floral sweetness on the long, persistent finish. This is a dry, outgoing white Bordeaux that drinks beautifully now, but the concentration, balance and acidity suggest very good aging potential over the next 8–10 years, developing more honeyed and nutty complexity with time.
Production
Château Valandraud Bordeaux Blanc is sourced from carefully tended vineyards on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where clay-limestone soils help retain freshness while giving depth and power to the wine. The grape blend is typically dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, supported by Sémillon and often a touch of Sauvignon Gris, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve aromatics and natural acidity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures, with a significant portion raised in high-quality French oak barrels (often with a proportion new) on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage. This approach brings together the vibrancy of Sauvignon with the texture, weight and subtle toastiness that define serious white Bordeaux.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white, ideal with rich seafood dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops, grilled prawns or roasted monkfish, as well as creamy poultry, veal in light sauces, and refined vegetable dishes like asparagus risotto or truffle-infused pasta. It also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or a mild goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both freshness and complexity. A light decanting of 20–30 minutes before serving can help the aromatics fully open, especially if the wine is drunk on the young side.
Producer
Château Valandraud was founded in the early 1990s by Jean-Luc Thunevin and has become one of the emblematic “garagiste” estates of Saint-Émilion, rising from outsider to star in just a few decades. Initially celebrated for its intensely concentrated red wines, the château has since extended its know-how to white Bordeaux, crafting limited-production cuvées that emphasize precision, richness and age-worthiness. Today, Valandraud holds Premier Grand Cru Classé status in Saint-Émilion and is recognized as a benchmark for innovation and quality in the region, consistently earning high praise from international critics for both its reds and its distinctive, high-end whites.
