Description

The 2019 Château Tertre Roteboeuf Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is one of those rare Right Bank wines where character, sensuality and absolute precision meet in the glass. From François Mitjavile’s tiny, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard above Saint-Laurent-de-Combes, this cuvée has earned a cult following for its lavish texture, profound aromatics and almost Burgundian finesse. The 2019 vintage is widely acclaimed by critics, confirming Tertre Roteboeuf’s status as one of the most distinctive and sought-after producers in Saint-Émilion.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a deep, shimmering garnet core with a violet rim, hinting at both richness and freshness. The nose is captivating and complex: cassis, ripe blackberries and dark cherries weave together with notes of violets, cigar box, sweet herbs, graphite and warm, mulchy earth. Subtle touches of cocoa, exotic spice and fine cedar emerge with air, reflecting the wine’s élevage in high-quality new oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet supremely refined, with a velvety, almost creamy texture wrapped around a dense, dark-fruited core. Layers of blackcurrant, kirsch and plum are lifted by floral tones and a lively, mouth-watering acidity that keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. The tannins are ultra-fine and silky, what Mitjavile calls “lushly resolved”, giving a sensuous, flowing feel across the palate. The finish is long, savoury and complex, echoing with spice, tobacco leaf and mineral notes. Already seductive in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and energy to evolve beautifully; expect a prime drinking window from around 8–10 years after the vintage, with the potential to age gracefully for two decades or more, gaining further tertiary nuance and aromatic depth.

Production
Tertre Roteboeuf’s 5.6 hectares sit on the south-facing clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Laurent-de-Combes, an amphitheatre-like site that naturally concentrates sun and warmth while retaining freshness from the limestone bedrock. The vineyard, planted mainly to Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, is trained unusually low to the ground and farmed with meticulous, hands-on care. Yields are kept very small, and harvest is deliberately late to achieve maximum physiological ripeness and that sought-after, gentle breakdown of tannins. In the cellar, Mitjavile favours a resolutely traditional, almost old-fashioned approach: warm fermentations, extended maceration and élevage in 100% new French oak barrels from Tonnellerie Radoux. There is no strict temperature control in the ageing cellar, which is allowed to follow the rhythm of the seasons, encouraging a natural, slow evolution that contributes to the wine’s textural richness and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a superb partner for richly flavoured dishes that mirror its depth and elegance. Think roast lamb with herb crust, dry-aged ribeye with bone marrow, duck breast with a red wine and cherry reduction, or braised veal shank and wild mushroom ragout. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, game birds and mature, hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C to showcase its aromatic complexity and supple structure. In youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to allow the wine to fully unfurl; with bottle age, a gentle 45–60 minute decant is ideal mainly to separate it from any sediment and to let the tertiary nuances blossom.

Producer
Château Tertre Roteboeuf is the life’s work of François Mitjavile, one of Bordeaux’s most singular and philosophically minded vignerons. Located on the southeastern fringes of Saint-Émilion, the estate has, under his guidance, risen from relative obscurity to become one of the region’s most admired and cult-followed properties. Mitjavile’s refusal to participate in the “Bordeaux circus” of classification politics and en primeur marketing has only sharpened the focus on what matters most here: the wine. Known for prioritising aromatic complexity, textural sensuality and a deeply traditional, artisanal approach in both vineyard and cellar, Tertre Roteboeuf consistently produces wines that stand apart in style and personality. The family’s work at sister estates Domaine de Cambes and Roc de Cambes on the Right Bank further underscores their reputation for crafting hauntingly beautiful, fruit-driven yet impeccably balanced Bordeaux that age in a fascinating, sometimes unpredictable way.
