Description

The 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla Magnum showcases the timeless elegance of great Margaux in a generous 1.5L format, ideal for the table or the cellar. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, Rauzan-Ségla has long been regarded as one of the benchmark estates of the appellation, known for its poised, perfumed and ageworthy wines. In 2019, the château produced a particularly refined and sensual wine, capturing both the opulence of the vintage and the unmistakable floral signature of Margaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla reveals a deep, vibrant ruby-red colour with a luminous rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant (cassis) and ripe blackberry interwoven with notes of violets, rose petals, and subtle sweet earth. Delicate hints of graphite, fine cedar and a touch of spice add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, seamless and polished, with a fine, satiny texture. The dark berry fruit is pure and precise, supported by beautifully refined tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that keeps the wine graceful rather than heavy. Flavours of cassis, black cherry and wild berries are wrapped in floral and mineral nuances, leading into a long, perfumed finish that lingers with notes of violets and subtle earth. In magnum format, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it will offer great pleasure from around 2026–2028, but can easily develop additional complexity for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
Château Rauzan-Ségla lies in the heart of the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay provide ideal drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic Bordelais companions. The estate’s vineyards benefit from the temperate maritime climate of the Gironde estuary, which helps achieve full ripeness while preserving aromatic finesse. Grapes are picked parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, typically harvested by hand to allow strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and aromatic purity. It is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new each year), where the tannins are polished and the wine gains additional layers of spice and texture without overpowering its floral, Margaux character.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla Magnum is a superb partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte or côte de boeuf, duck breast, or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with refined game birds, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to highlight its perfume and finesse. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfold its aromatics and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Rauzan-Ségla traces its origins back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the historic Rauzan estate, later divided into four separate properties in 1762. The portion that became Rauzan-Ségla was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségla, whose name the château still proudly bears. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, it has long been recognised as one of the leading lights of Margaux. Over the centuries, the estate has experienced periods of both prosperity and challenge—from the phylloxera crisis to economic downturns—passing through the hands of families such as the Freys. A major turning point came in 1994, when the Wertheimer family, owners of the luxury house Chanel, purchased the property. Their significant investments in the vineyard and cellar, combined with an unwavering focus on quality, have restored Rauzan-Ségla to the very top tier of Bordeaux, where its wines are now widely celebrated for their precision, perfume, and aging potential.
