Description

2019 Château Quintus Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a poised and powerful expression of the Right Bank, crafted under the prestigious Domaine Clarence Dillon umbrella (owners of Château Haut-Brion). This vintage marries depth, elegance and modern precision, offering a richly layered red that still retains the classical charm of Saint-Émilion. Named in homage to the Gallo-Roman settlers who first cultivated vines here, Quintus celebrates both ancient origins and contemporary excellence in Bordeaux winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Quintus shows a deep, vibrant red core with bright carmine highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive and complex, opening with ripe black fruits—especially blackcurrant and blackberry—wrapped in notes of plum compote, followed by subtle spice, graphite, and a touch of cedar and cocoa as it breathes. On the palate, the wine is broad and fleshy on entry, with a beautifully velvety texture that coats the mouth without feeling heavy. The Merlot brings plush black fruit, mocha and a sensual, creamy mid-palate, while the Cabernet Franc contributes fine-grained tannins, floral lift and a refined, elongated structure. The tannins are polished and finessed, giving a supple, almost creamy feel, and the finish is long, pure and free of any harshness, with lingering dark fruit and spice notes. This is a vintage with excellent balance and the structure to age gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and integration over time.

Production
Château Quintus sits on a prime limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, a terroir renowned for giving Merlot and Cabernet Franc both power and finesse. The vineyards are planted predominantly with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, and are cultivated with meticulous attention to vine health and low yields to ensure maximum concentration. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, allowing for careful selection of only the best clusters. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vinified separately by plot, using temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a significant proportion of new oak) to bring additional structure, depth and subtle spice, while always keeping the focus on the character of the fruit and the distinctive Saint-Émilion terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is an excellent partner for refined dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to let the aromas fully unfold. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open; as it matures, a shorter decant or even a gentle splash in the carafe will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Quintus is part of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the illustrious Bordeaux family estate that also owns the legendary Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Created by bringing together several exceptional Saint-Émilion properties, Quintus represents the group’s ambitious vision on the Right Bank, combining top-tier terroir with the technical expertise and exacting standards of one of Bordeaux’s most respected wine dynasties. The name “Quintus” is a nod to the Gallo-Roman tradition of naming the fifth child ‘Quintus’, and symbolizes both continuity and a new chapter in the region’s history. In a relatively short time, Château Quintus has established itself as a rising star of Saint-Émilion, consistently earning strong critical acclaim and recognition for its precision, elegance and age-worthy style.
