Description
The 2019 Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac Grand Cru Classé in magnum format is a powerful yet poised Left Bank classic, offering both immediate seduction and serious cellar potential. This biodynamically farmed Fifth Growth has long punched above its classification, and 2019 is regarded as one of the most compelling vintages of the modern era at the estate. The larger 1.5L magnum bottle not only elevates the sense of occasion, it also ensures a slower, more graceful evolution over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Pontet-Canet shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple core with a youthful, glossy sheen. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered, unfolding with ripe plum, black cherry and kirsch alongside notes of peony, dried herbs, potpourri, cedar and a finely woven tapestry of sweet spices and dried flowers.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, generous and seamless Pauillac, with beautifully polished, almost velvety tannins and a juicy, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the richness in perfect check. Dark berry and plum fruit are framed by subtle graphite, cocoa and savory herbal nuances, leading into a long, refined, almost liqueur-like finish that lingers with floral and spicy echoes. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: expect a prime drinking window from around 2027–2045+, with the format allowing it to evolve more slowly and harmoniously than a standard bottle.
Production
Château Pontet-Canet is located in the heart of Pauillac, on deep gravel soils over limestone and clay—classic Médoc terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with an emphasis on soil health, biodiversity and low intervention, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure optimal selection of bunches. In the cellar, the wine is vinified parcel by parcel, using a mix of concrete, oak and often amphora to preserve purity of fruit, followed by careful aging in a judicious proportion of new French oak and other neutral vessels. The approach is aimed at expressing the character of the terroir with clarity, finesse and energy rather than overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Pauillac is an outstanding partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs, and it also works beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. In magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant primarily for sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of Pauillac’s great success stories, having risen in reputation to rival many higher-classed neighbors. Owned by the Tesseron family since the 1970s, the estate has become a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux and is widely recognized for its pioneering, terroir-driven approach. Over the past two decades, Pontet-Canet has earned consistent critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors, celebrated for producing wines that combine depth, precision and a distinctive, vibrant energy that speaks clearly of its Pauillac origins.
