Description
The 2019 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac is a commanding, yet beautifully refined Left Bank classic from one of Bordeaux’s most beloved estates. Sourced from impeccably situated vineyards just beside some of Pauillac’s greatest Premier Crus, it marries intensity of dark fruit with the château’s hallmark elegance and precision. This vintage is already being hailed as one of the estate’s modern benchmarks, uniting power, purity and energy in a wine built for decades of graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Pichon Comtesse shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, promising concentration and depth. The nose is strikingly pure and expressive, with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry intertwined with graphite, crushed stone, fresh mint and a whisper of rose petals, menthol, licorice and grilled herbs that unfurl as the wine opens.
On the palate, it is both powerful and poised: a core of pristine, dark fruit framed by ultra-fine, cashmere-like tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The wine feels driven and energetic, gaining intensity and complexity with air, while the Cabernet character becomes more pronounced over time. The finish is long, linear and incredibly precise, leaving lingering notes of black fruit, graphite and cool herbal tones. This is a very serious, ageworthy Pauillac with the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over 20–30+ years in a good cellar, yet its polish and harmony also make it surprisingly seductive in youth with sufficient aeration.
Production
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande lies on the deep gravel ridges of Pauillac, with vines overlooking the Gironde estuary—an exceptional terroir that naturally favors Cabernet-based blends of great finesse and longevity. The 2019 fruit was harvested by hand between 16 September and 8 October, allowing for strict selection of perfectly ripe bunches and optimal expression of each parcel. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve purity and refinement rather than overt power, before being matured in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to layer in complexity, polish the tannins and frame the wine’s vibrant, dark-fruited core.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Pauillac shines alongside classic dishes such as roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, game birds, and richly flavored dishes with herbs, mushrooms or truffles. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses like aged Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or English cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and structural finesse. Decant 2–3 hours in advance in its youth to fully release the wine’s layered bouquet and soften the tannins; with maturity, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be sufficient to let it show its full complexity.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, often affectionately called “Pichon Comtesse,” is one of Bordeaux’s most admired Second Growths from the 1855 Classification, renowned for bringing a uniquely sensual and elegant expression to the powerful terroir of Pauillac. Situated just across the road from some of the Médoc’s most illustrious First Growths, the estate has long benefited from exceptional gravel soils and a high proportion of Cabernet in its vineyards, crafting wines that combine depth, structure and charm. Under modern stewardship and significant investment, Pichon Comtesse has seen a remarkable rise in quality, with recent vintages—including 2019—earning critical acclaim and reinforcing the château’s status as one of the Left Bank’s true reference estates.
