Description
2019 Château Petrus is one of those rare wines that defines what great Bordeaux can be: profound, slow to reveal itself, and built for the ages. Sourced from the legendary plateau of Pomerol, this vintage shows Petrus at its most concentrated and refined, combining immense power with remarkable purity. Offered here with impeccable provenance, it is the kind of bottle that marks a cellar – and an occasion – as truly special.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Petrus remains strikingly opaque, with a deep purple-black core that clings to the sides of the glass – a visual cue to its intensity and youth. The nose is initially reserved, almost austere, but with time and air it blossoms into a heady aromatic tapestry: preserved plums, blackberry and blueberry compote are layered with nuances of melted licorice, dark chocolate and black truffle, supported by a ferrous, mineral undertone reminiscent of iron ore. As the wine continues to evolve in the glass, delicate floral notes of lilac and rose oil emerge, lending lift and elegance to the deep, dark fruit.
On the palate, this is tightly coiled and muscular, a monumental structure wrapped around perfectly ripe black and blue fruits. The texture is dense yet impeccably polished, with ultra-fine but assertive tannins framing waves of black plum, cassis, blueberry, exotic spice and earthy, truffle-laced complexity. There is immense concentration, but also a sense of precision and freshness that keeps the wine in perfect balance, the long finish echoing with dark chocolate, licorice and mineral tones. This is a Petrus that will demand patience: it is expected to need a good 8–10 years before it truly begins to open and will then evolve majestically for decades — easily 30–50 years or more in a pristine cellar.
Production
Château Petrus sits on the most celebrated terroir of Pomerol, a unique plateau dominated by deep, blue clay over an iron-rich subsoil that gives the wine its unmistakable power and singular personality. The vineyard, planted almost entirely to Merlot on this exceptional clay, is farmed with meticulous care and extremely low yields, with all grapes harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit is selected. Vinification is highly precise and deliberately low-intervention: the fruit is carefully sorted, then fermented in temperature-controlled cement vats to preserve purity and detail, followed by aging for around 18–20 months in French oak barrels (a high proportion of which are new), where the wine slowly gains its remarkable texture, aromatic complexity and ability to age for generations.
Food & Serving
While 2019 Petrus is a collector’s wine that will often be enjoyed on its own at peak maturity, it truly shines alongside refined, simply prepared dishes that allow its complexity to take center stage. Think classic roast lamb with thyme, veal tenderloin, pigeon, or beef tournedos with truffle jus, as well as earthy dishes featuring morels, porcini or black truffle, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or old mimolette. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and aromatics; in its youth, decant generously for 2–3 hours to coax out its layers, and once mature, a gentle 1–2 hour decant is sufficient to let the wine fully express its depth without losing its more delicate floral and tertiary notes.
Producer
Château Petrus is one of the most revered names in Bordeaux and the unquestioned star of Pomerol, despite its relatively modest size compared to the grand estates of the Left Bank. Its modern reputation was forged in the mid-20th century, as a handful of visionary owners and merchants recognized the extraordinary potential of its singular clay terroir and championed it to the world. Today, Petrus is regarded as a benchmark for 100% (or near 100%) Merlot wines, consistently producing some of the most sought-after and long-lived reds on the planet. Its tiny production, rigorous standards in the vineyard and cellar, and an unparalleled track record for quality have cemented Petrus as a global icon – a wine that not only reflects Pomerol at its finest, but also stands as one of the great reference points for fine wine as a whole.
