Description

The 2019 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé in magnum format is a poised, ultra-classic expression of this legendary estate. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it brings together depth, elegance and energy in one of the most exciting recent vintages in Bordeaux. Bottled in magnum and delivered in its original wooden case (OWC/1), this is a collector’s format designed for long-term cellaring and truly memorable occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Palmer 2019 shows a deep garnet-purple color, dense and almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is refined yet powerful: pronounced blackcurrant and blackberries mingle with warm plums and black cherries, layered with cedar wood, pencil shavings, and delicate notes of violet. Subtle hints of dark chocolate, star anise and sandalwood add a luxurious, spicy complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a strikingly vibrant, pure core of black fruit. The texture is firm yet polished, with ripe, fine-grained tannins giving structure without heaviness. Fresh acidity lifts the dark berry and plum flavors, while mineral notes carry through to an exceptionally long, focused finish. Still tightly coiled, this 2019 needs 6–8 years in bottle to fully unfurl, after which it will continue to evolve beautifully. In magnum, the aging potential is even greater, comfortably stretching to 2065 and beyond under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Palmer lies on the gravelly terraces of Margaux in the Médoc, where deep layers of Garonne gravel mixed with sand and clay provide outstanding drainage and force the vines to root deeply. This terroir is particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which together form the backbone of the 2019 blend, complemented by a small but significant proportion of Petit Verdot. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work, with a strong focus on biodynamic and sustainable practices, low yields and careful parcel selection at harvest. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with plot-by-plot fermentation to preserve the character of each parcel. The wine then matures in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, allowing the fruit, tannins and oak to integrate slowly and harmoniously before bottling.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Château Palmer Margaux is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, tournedos of beef with truffle jus, slow-braised veal, or game birds such as pigeon or duck. On the cheese board, opt for aged hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or mature cheddar rather than strong blue styles, which can overwhelm the wine’s elegance. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best expression. In its youth, this magnum will benefit from 2–3 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to blossom; as it matures, a gentle decant mainly to remove any sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Palmer is one of the great names of Margaux, officially classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the 1855 classification, but long regarded by critics and collectors as a “super second” for the quality of its wines. The estate’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when it was acquired and developed by General Charles Palmer, and it has since become synonymous with richly textured, perfumed Bordeaux that marries power with finesse. Today, Château Palmer is a benchmark for the appellation, pioneering biodynamic viticulture at the top end of the Médoc and consistently producing some of the most sought-after wines in the region. Its reputation for ageworthy, complex and supremely elegant Margaux makes every great vintage—especially in large formats like magnum—a highly desirable addition to any serious cellar.
