Description

The 2019 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux that beautifully marries density, finesse and aromatic complexity. Blending 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it captures the silkiness and perfume that have made Palmer one of Margaux’s most sought‑after names. From a superb vintage with great structure and freshness, this is a wine built for collectors who value both early charm and serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Palmer shows a deep, saturated garnet-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, signaling its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackcurrants and blackberries mingle with warm plum, black cherry and crème de cassis, wrapped in notes of cedar, pencil shavings, violets and dark chocolate. Subtle hints of sandalwood, star anise and spice add an exotic, almost incense-like complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with remarkable energy and precision. The black fruit is pure and vibrant—think cassis, blackberry and black plum—framed by ripe, finely grained tannins that feel firm yet velvety. There is a clear mineral streak and a lively line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and lifted, driving a very long, savory, lightly saline finish. Still tightly coiled in its youth, this 2019 will reward patience: it should begin to really open up after 6–8 years in bottle and has the structure to age gracefully well into the 2060s and beyond.

Production
Château Palmer is situated on the deep gravel and pebble soils of Margaux, with underlying sand and clay that help retain freshness and give the wines their hallmark aromatic lift and silky texture. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot to ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the grand vin. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, where it develops complexity, polish and integration before bottling at the estate.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Château Palmer is an outstanding partner for refined, protein‑rich dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, beef Wellington, dry‑aged ribeye, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, game birds and well‑aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and texture. Decanting is strongly recommended for young bottles—give it 2–3 hours if drinking in its first decade—to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfurl; older bottles (15+ years) may need only a gentle, shorter decant to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Palmer, classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc, has long punched far above its official rank and is widely regarded as one of the so‑called “Super Seconds” of Bordeaux. Located in the appellation of Margaux, the estate gained its name and reputation under the ownership of British Major General Charles Palmer in the 19th century, and has since become synonymous with perfumed, velvety, age‑worthy wines that emphasize elegance as much as power. In recent decades, Palmer has embraced meticulous vineyard management, including biodynamic principles, and highly precise winemaking, elevating quality to consistently exceptional levels. Today, it is considered one of the reference points of the Margaux appellation and a must‑have name in any serious Bordeaux collection.
