Description
The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild 1er Grand Cru Classé in magnum format is a benchmark Pauillac, combining hedonistic richness with classical Bordeaux precision. Bottled in 1.5L, it offers slower, more graceful aging and an even more harmonious evolution than its 75cl counterpart. As the only château ever promoted to First Growth status in 1973, Mouton Rothschild stands at the pinnacle of the Médoc, uniting grand terroir, art, and heritage in every vintage-specific label.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Mouton Rothschild is an opaque purple-black, dense and almost impenetrable at the core, hinting at its concentration and longevity. The nose is vivid and layered, opening with crème de cassis, ripe blueberries, boysenberry and black raspberry, then unfolding into cedar wood, sandalwood, dark chocolate, jasmine tea, violet and a wisp of wood smoke. Subtle notes of star anise and pencil shavings underscore its Pauillac pedigree.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine that glides rather than weighs, with an almost electric energy. The core is packed with blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry fruit, interwoven with exotic spice, graphite, and a refined mineral edge. The tannins are exquisitely ripe and fine-grained, providing structure without harshness, while a vibrant line of acidity keeps everything lifted and fresh. The finish is very long, perfumed and persistent, echoing cassis, floral notes and spice for many seconds. In magnum, this 2019 has formidable aging potential: expect it to shine from around 2030 and evolve beautifully for three to four decades or more under proper cellaring.
Production
The grapes for Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 come from the estate’s 74 hectares of vineyards in Pauillac, on the northern Médoc’s famed gravelly hilltops, bordering Saint-Estèphe and adjacent to Château Lafite Rothschild. Deep layers of gravel over limestone and clay provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, ideal for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the blend at 90%, complemented by 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Harvest took place by hand between 18 September and 5 October, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit was used. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise extraction tailored to each terroir. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, where it gains additional complexity, texture and aromatic nuance before bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Mouton Rothschild is a superb match for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also complements game birds, truffle-accented dishes, mushroom-based sauces and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for near-term enjoyment, and even longer if opened in its first 10–15 years—to allow the wine to fully unfurl its layers.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates and a global reference for fine wine. Located in Pauillac, it was long considered a "super second" before being uniquely promoted in 1973 to First Growth (Premier Grand Cru Classé) status, a testament to the vision of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, particularly Baroness Philippine and now the next generation, Mouton has become renowned not only for its grand Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines but also for its iconic labels, which feature a different work of art commissioned from a major artist each vintage. Together with its neighbors in Pauillac, Mouton has helped define the style and prestige of the Médoc, regularly producing wines that are celebrated for both their opulence and their capacity to age for decades.
