Description

Bottled in an impressive 1.5L magnum, the 2019 La Dame de Montrose is the distinguished second wine of Château Montrose, one of Saint-Estèphe’s benchmark estates. Crafted to the same exacting standards as the grand vin and from the same privileged vineyard holdings, it offers a more approachable, seductive expression of this famed terroir. Dominated by sumptuous Merlot and complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it delivers classic Bordeaux character with a silkier, earlier-drinking profile. Created in 1983 as a homage to Yvonne Charmolüe, who heroically managed Château Montrose alone from 1944 to 1960, La Dame de Montrose has become a reference among second wines of the Médoc. Produced in limited quantities—typically 40–45% of the estate’s total output—and aged 12 months in 30% new French oak, the 2019 beautifully captures the energy and refinement of a great modern vintage in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Dame de Montrose Magnum shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with purple highlights, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately charming and perfumed, with lifted notes of black cherry, ripe blueberry and wild blackberry wrapped in aromas of violets, peony and a hint of crushed rose petals. Subtle layers of graphite, sweet spice, cedar and a touch of cocoa emerge with air, underlining its Saint-Estèphe pedigree and time in fine-grained French oak. On the palate, the wine is supple and generous, with the Merlot-led blend giving a velvety, almost plush texture that contrasts attractively with the appellation’s usual austerity. Dense black and red fruits—black cherry, plum and blackcurrant—are framed by fresh acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins. Notes of licorice, mocha, pencil shavings and a subtle hint of tobacco add complexity on the long, harmonious finish. Already accessible in its youth, especially from magnum, it will nonetheless benefit from a few years of cellaring; expect a graceful drinking window of roughly 2024–2034+, with the larger format offering slightly extended aging potential.

Production
La Dame de Montrose is sourced entirely from Château Montrose’s estate vineyards in Saint-Estèphe, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep gravel ridges interlaced with clay and sand overlook the Gironde estuary. This classic Médoc terroir provides excellent drainage for Cabernet varieties while the underlying clay retains enough moisture to bring richness and plushness to the Merlot that forms the heart of this cuvée. The grapes—predominantly Merlot (over 50%) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—are carefully harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve fruit purity and structural balance. In the cellar, each plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats to allow precise extraction and blending. After fermentation and élevage on fine lees, the final blend is matured for 12 months in French oak barriques, about 30% of which are new, adding gentle spice and texture without overwhelming the wine’s vibrant fruit and floral character.

Food & Serving
The 2019 La Dame de Montrose in magnum is an excellent centrepiece for refined yet convivial meals. Its generous Merlot core and refined tannins make it a natural partner for roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, entrecôte, slow-braised short ribs or duck breast. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, roasted root vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); given the magnum format and youthful structure, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften. For more evolved, tertiary nuances, you can extend decanting slightly, particularly as the wine gains a few years of bottle age.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of the Médoc, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated in Saint-Estèphe, the estate rose to prominence in the 19th century and has since built a formidable reputation for powerful, long-lived wines that rival many First Growths in stature. Under successive generations of dedicated ownership and thoughtful investment in vineyard and cellar, Montrose has become a benchmark for precision, sustainability and terroir expression on the Left Bank. La Dame de Montrose, its second wine created in 1983 as a tribute to former owner Yvonne Charmolüe, has evolved into one of Bordeaux’s most respected second labels, known for delivering the estate’s hallmark depth and refinement in a more approachable and earlier-drinking style—particularly prized in classic vintages like 2019.
