Description
2019 Château Monbousquet Blanc is a rare white Bordeaux from the heart of red-wine country, Saint-Émilion. Crafted by Gérard Perse, owner of the famed Château Pavie, this cuvée proves that outstanding, characterful white wine can indeed be made in this prestigious Right Bank appellation. Produced from a tiny 1-hectare plot, it’s a limited, high-quality bottling that beautifully showcases both terroir and ambition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Monbousquet Blanc shines a bright pale gold with subtle green reflections, hinting at freshness and vibrancy. The nose opens with aromas of dried pear and lemon zest, layered with a gentle touch of mango and ripe stone fruit, supported by discreet notes of chalk and wet stone that add refinement and precision.
On the palate, this is a fruit-driven yet structured white, combining richness with tension. Flavors of citrus, dried pear and mango glide over a creamy, almost waxy texture, balanced by a fine, lightly tannic grip from the Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. A lively, well-integrated acidity carries the wine through to a long, savory, mineral-tinged finish with a faintly chalky edge. While already expressive and delicious now, it has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years from the vintage, gaining complexity and more pronounced tertiary nuances.
Production
The grapes for Château Monbousquet Blanc come from a small, gravel-dominated parcel in Saint-Émilion—an unusual but highly suitable terroir for white varieties. The well-drained, gravelly soils help concentrate flavor while preserving natural acidity, lending the wine its distinctive mineral backbone. The vineyard is carefully managed with low yields and meticulous selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe Sauvignon Blanc (66%) and Sauvignon Gris (33%) are used. Hand-harvested fruit is gently pressed and vinified in small lots, with a focus on preserving aromatic purity and texture—typically involving cool fermentation and élevage that may include a mix of stainless steel and barrel to balance freshness, creaminess and complexity.
Food & Serving
This white Bordeaux is an ideal partner for refined seafood dishes such as scallops, lobster, langoustines or grilled turbot, as well as citrus-marinated fish carpaccio and sushi. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, or fresh goat cheese and semi-soft cheeses where its acidity and mineral notes can cut through the richness. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the texture and aromatics to fully unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help open up the nose and integrate the fruit and mineral notes if enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Château Monbousquet is one of Saint-Émilion’s notable estates, elevated to greater prominence under the ownership of Gérard Perse, who is also the proprietor of the illustrious Château Pavie. Long rooted in Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Monbousquet has become known for its bold, expressive reds and, more unusually, for its limited-production white, which stands out in a region dominated by Merlot-based wines. By planting and nurturing Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris on a carefully chosen gravel parcel, Perse has carved out a distinctive niche for Monbousquet Blanc, showcasing the estate’s innovative spirit and contributing to the growing recognition of high-quality white wines from Saint-Émilion.
