Description

The 2019 Château Margaux is a benchmark expression of one of Bordeaux’s most storied First Growth estates, offered here in its original wooden case (OWC/1) for collectors and enthusiasts alike. From an outstanding vintage in the Médoc, this grand vin marries power, finesse, and remarkable purity, showcasing why Château Margaux remains a global reference for Cabernet-based blends. Its combination of pedigree, rarity, and age-worthiness makes it a centerpiece for any serious cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Margaux reveals a deep, shimmering garnet core with violet reflections along the rim, suggesting both concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully perfumed and layered: blackcurrant and ripe cassis intertwine with notes of blackberry, wild raspberry, and a delicate floral lift of violet and rose petal. Subtle tones of cedar wood, graphite, tobacco leaf, and fine spice (clove, vanilla, a hint of licorice) add a refined complexity that unfurls with air. On the palate, this is effortlessly elegant yet structurally precise. Silky, ultra-fine tannins frame a core of dark, pure fruit—cassis, black cherry, and plum—balanced by vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and poised. Hints of cocoa, pencil shavings, and freshly crushed herbs echo through the long, persistent finish. This 2019 combines the sensual texture typical of Margaux with the depth and precision of a top Left Bank vintage. While already captivating in its youth, it is built for the long haul, with an aging potential of 20–40 years or more under proper cellaring conditions, during which it will gain further nuance, tertiary complexity, and aromatic detail.

Production
Château Margaux sits on one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated terroirs in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc, characterized by deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that provide excellent drainage and encourage vines to root deeply. The grand vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, each parcel vinified separately to reflect its specific character. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, combining tradition and state-of-the-art technology to capture both purity and finesse. The wine is then matured in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it ages on its fine lees, gaining texture, aromatic complexity, and the signature polish that defines Château Margaux.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Château Margaux deserves thoughtful pairing and careful service. It is superb with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine reduction, and also complements refined poultry like roast duck or truffled roast chicken. More traditional French fare—such as entrecôte bordelaise, mushroom fricassée, and aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda, or Manchego)—will highlight its complexity and structure. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux stems. For current drinking, decanting 2–3 hours before serving will help the wine open and express its floral and spicy nuances; as it matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will typically be sufficient to remove any sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s legendary First Growth estates, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification and long regarded as the reference point for the Margaux appellation. Wine has been produced on this estate since at least the 16th century, with its reputation firmly established by the 18th century among Europe’s nobility and connoisseurs. Today the château is renowned for crafting some of the world’s most elegant and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines, recognized for their perfume, finesse, and remarkable aging capacity. Under modern stewardship, the estate has invested heavily in vineyard management and cutting-edge winemaking while preserving its centuries-old traditions, consistently earning top scores and acclaim from critics and collectors around the globe.
