Description

Bottled in magnum for extended aging and added grandeur at the table, the 2019 Château Margaux is widely regarded as one of the standout wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Crafted from a classic Left Bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it marries purity of fruit with remarkable finesse and architectural precision. Awarded a perfect 100 points by both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and James Suckling, this is a reference-point Margaux that serious collectors will not want to miss.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Margaux Magnum shows a luminous, deep ruby color with violet highlights at the rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is beautifully complex and perfumed, with layers of ripe blackberry, wild raspberry, and cassis unfolding into notes of rose petals, violets, cedar, pencil shavings and a whisper of graphite and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet wonderfully poised, with a sensuous, layered texture that delivers intensity without heaviness. A vibrant core of dark and red fruits is framed by ultra-fine, powdery tannins and fresh, lifted acidity, giving the wine both structure and energy. The finish is strikingly long, saline and precise, with mineral and savory nuances that linger almost endlessly. In magnum format, this 2019 has superb aging potential: it will reward patience over 20–40 years, gaining even greater complexity, silkier tannins, and tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor.

Production
Château Margaux sits on one of the most privileged terroirs in Bordeaux’s Margaux appellation, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide exceptional drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to reach perfect ripeness while preserving elegance. The grapes for the grand vin are rigorously selected from the estate’s oldest and best-exposed plots, mostly harvested by hand in small crates to protect the fruit. In 2019, the blend consists of approximately 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Vinification is highly precise and parcel-based, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. The result is a wine that seamlessly integrates oak and fruit, showcasing both the character of the vintage and the timeless signature of Château Margaux.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Château Margaux Magnum is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes that complement its structure and complexity: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison with a red wine reduction, or classic French dishes like beef Wellington or pigeon en croûte. It will also shine with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and hard, aged cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours in advance for current drinking—to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatics and soften its tannins. In future decades, a shorter decant will suffice to gently awaken its more mature nuances.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious First Growths, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification and long revered as the benchmark for elegance in the Margaux appellation. Winegrowing on the estate dates back several centuries, but it rose to international prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries, cementing its reputation for producing wines of unparalleled finesse and longevity. Today, Château Margaux remains a standard-bearer for classical Bordeaux, combining meticulous vineyard management, cutting-edge research, and a deep respect for tradition. Its grand vin is consistently among the most sought-after wines in the world, and vintages like 2019—crowned with perfect scores—underscore its enduring status as one of the greatest estates in France.
