Description

The 2019 Château l'If Saint-Émilion in magnum format is a striking expression of modern Right Bank Bordeaux, crafted with precision and a clear sense of place. Owned by Jacques Thienpont of the legendary Château Le Pin in Pomerol, this relatively young estate has rapidly earned a reputation for producing finely tuned, terroir-driven wines. In the outstanding 2019 vintage, Château l’If delivers a wine that marries depth and power with remarkable elegance and freshness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château l’If shows a deep, vivid ruby-red hue, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe red and black fruits—think cherry, plum and blackberry—interwoven with floral notes of violet. Subtle hints of licorice, graphite and well-judged oak add further complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this is full-bodied and generous yet wonderfully refined. The core of dark, ripe fruit is framed by lively acidity and beautifully integrated, fine-grained tannins, giving the wine a supple, almost velvety texture. Layers of dark berries, spice and a touch of minerality unfold across the mid-palate, leading into a long, lingering finish with a savoury, almost saline edge that enhances its complexity. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–20 years or more, gaining further aromatic nuance and polish with time.

Production
Château l’If is situated in Saint-Émilion, with its core five-hectare vineyard surrounding the estate just below Troplong Mondot, complemented by parcels near Lassegue and the cooler sector of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. The varied terroirs, with a keen focus on the finest clay-rich soils, are carefully mapped through detailed soil studies to guide precise blending. Of the estate’s eight hectares, four have been replanted over the past decade with superior vine genetics and higher-density plantings to enhance quality and concentration. The wine is typically Merlot-dominant with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, which brings structure and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness and vinified with meticulous care in a combination of stainless steel and oak, preserving purity of fruit while building texture. Maturation follows in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add structure, spice and complexity without masking the wine’s inherent elegance and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Château l’If Saint-Émilion Magnum is a versatile partner at the table, especially well-suited to refined, flavourful dishes. It shines alongside roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged beef, duck breast, and game birds, as well as rich mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, and hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In magnum format, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; as the wine develops with age, a shorter decant of around 45 minutes will generally suffice.

Producer
Château l’If is a relatively young yet already highly esteemed estate in Saint-Émilion, owned by Jacques Thienpont, the visionary vigneron behind the iconic Château Le Pin in Pomerol. Named after the yew tree (“if” in French) that stands on the property, the estate has quickly carved out its own identity through detailed vineyard work and a clear focus on terroir. With just eight hectares under vine, l’If operates on a boutique scale, emphasising low yields, precise viticulture and thoughtful winemaking. The replanting of half the vineyard with superior clones and higher-density layouts, guided by in-depth soil analysis, reflects the estate’s ambition to produce wines of real distinction. In a short time, Château l’If has become one of the most exciting names in Saint-Émilion, recognised by critics and collectors alike for its refined, contemporary style and consistent quality.
