Description
2019 Château l'If Saint-Émilion is a modern classic in the making from one of Bordeaux’s most exciting small estates. Crafted by Jacques Thienpont, the visionary behind the legendary Château Le Pin in Pomerol, this cuvée combines Saint-Émilion’s depth and elegance with striking precision and purity. Named after the ancient yew tree (“If” in French) on the property, it has rapidly earned a reputation for producing wines of remarkable finesse and terroir expression.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château l'If shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red hue that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe red and black fruits—think cherry, plum and blackberry—woven together with violet florals, licorice, graphite and a discreet touch of fine French oak.
On the palate, this is full and generous yet poised and refined, with a beautiful interplay between juicy fruit, bright acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins. Flavors of dark berry compote, black cherry and plum are lifted by notes of spice, subtle cocoa and a saline, mineral edge that brings real tension and complexity. The texture is supple and silky, leading into a long, persistent finish with a savory, almost salty nuance that invites another sip. Built for aging, the 2019 has the structure and energy to evolve gracefully over 10–20 years, while already offering impressive harmony in its youth.
Production
Château l'If sits on a patchwork of prime Saint-Émilion terroirs: the core five hectares around the château just below Troplong Mondot, complemented by parcels near Lassegue and in the cooler sector of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Here, clay-rich soils over limestone provide power, freshness and a distinct mineral signature. Around half the vineyard has been replanted in the last decade with superior vine genetics at higher densities, and detailed soil studies now guide a highly selective approach, focusing on the best clay-based plots. The 2019 growing season delivered excellent conditions, combining ripe fruit with vibrant acidity. Grapes—primarily Merlot with a smaller share of Cabernet Franc—are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then vinified with precision in a combination of stainless steel and oak to preserve purity and detail. Élevage takes place in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, adding structure, polish and complexity without overwhelming the fruit or terroir expression.
Food & Serving
2019 Château l’If is a compelling partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal chops, duck breast, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan, as well as well-ripened soft cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully blossom and the tannins to soften; more mature bottles may need only a brief, gentle decant to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château l’If is a relatively young but already highly regarded estate in Saint-Émilion, owned by Jacques Thienpont, the same family name behind the iconic Château Le Pin in Pomerol. Since acquiring the property, the Thienponts have transformed l’If into one of the right bank’s rising stars through meticulous vineyard work, replanting with high-quality vine material and increasing planting densities to enhance complexity and concentration. Guided by detailed soil mapping and a clear focus on expressing the nuances of Saint-Émilion’s clay and limestone terroirs, the estate has quickly carved out a distinct identity for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines. Although its history is short compared to many neighbors, Château l’If already holds a significant place among the new wave of top-tier Bordeaux producers, admired for its precision, purity and ageworthy style.
