Description

The 2019 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion Magnum is a striking expression of modern Pessac-Léognan, crafted on just 6.4 hectares of prime gravelly terroir that directly neighbors the iconic Château Haut-Brion. Presented in a 1.5L magnum, this bottling is built for graceful, extended aging and memorable occasions. Combining cutting-edge winemaking with an illustrious terroir, it has quickly become one of the most talked‑about wines in Bordeaux’s Left Bank. With its high proportion of Cabernet Franc in the blend, the 2019 stands out for its perfume, finesse, and tension, distinguishing it from many of its peers in the appellation. The estate, revitalized under owner Patrice Pichet and guided by renowned consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, has undergone a dramatic qualitative rise in the last decade, and insiders now rank Les Carmes Haut-Brion among the elite of Pessac-Léognan.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion shows a deep garnet-purple hue with a vivid, almost luminescent rim, hinting at both concentration and energy. The nose is complex and seductive: savory notes of black olives, charcuterie and Sichuan pepper unfold over layers of bright redcurrant jelly, black cherry and cassis. Subtle floral and citrus accents—rose petals and candied orange or mandarin peel—add lift and aromatic nuance, evolving beautifully with air. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet intensely flavored, the hallmark of a great, finely balanced Bordeaux. The attack is pure and vibrant, with juicy red and black fruits wrapped in a firm, ultra-fine tannic structure. There is a spine of fresh acidity that keeps everything precise and elongated, while hints of spice, graphite, and savory herbs linger through a long, perfumed finish. The magnum format and the wine’s structure promise excellent aging potential: expect it to drink well from around 2026 and evolve gracefully for at least 20–30 years, gaining in complexity, silkiness and tertiary notes with time.

Production
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion lies in Pessac-Léognan on classic Graves terroir: deep gravel and sand over clay, with excellent drainage and a moderating urban microclimate on the outskirts of Bordeaux. The vineyard—planted notably to a high proportion of Cabernet Franc alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—is managed with meticulous, parcel-by-parcel attention. Yields are deliberately kept low, with careful, often manual harvests carried out at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and aromatic intensity. In the cellar, the estate favors a refined, contemporary approach: whole-berry and partial whole-cluster fermentations, gentle extractions, and a judicious use of new French oak (often complemented by larger oak vessels and sometimes concrete) to frame, rather than dominate, the fruit. The result is a wine that marries depth and structure with remarkable precision and lift.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion Magnum is a superb partner for refined yet flavorful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with cherry or orange glaze, veal chops, or game birds. It also complements earthy preparations such as wild mushroom ragout, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In magnum, and given its youth, decanting is recommended—about 2 hours for current drinking—to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; as the wine matures, a shorter decant of 30–60 minutes will be sufficient mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion traces its origins back to the 16th century, when the land belonged to the Carmelite monks who gave the estate its name. Located in Pessac-Léognan and sharing a privileged gravel terroir with its illustrious neighbor Château Haut-Brion, the property has long been recognized as one of the hidden jewels of the Graves. A new era began under current owner Patrice Pichet, who invested heavily in vineyard renewal and commissioned a striking, state-of-the-art winery, while enlisting top consulting talent such as Stéphane Derenoncourt. Today, Les Carmes Haut-Brion is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and exciting estates in Bordeaux, consistently earning critical acclaim for its distinctive, Cabernet-Franc-driven style that combines aromatic complexity, finesse, and remarkable aging capacity.
