Description

The 2019 Château Le Pin Pomerol is one of Bordeaux’s most coveted treasures, produced in minuscule quantities from a tiny two-hectare vineyard in the heart of Pomerol. This is a Merlot‑dominant, cult-status wine that marries hedonistic richness with remarkable finesse and purity. With its silky power, rarity and impeccable pedigree, the 2019 vintage is a benchmark Le Pin poised to delight both collectors and serious Bordeaux enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Le Pin is deep ruby to purple with a vibrant, almost luminous core that hints at its concentration. The nose is immediately expressive and seductive, unfurling layers of ripe raspberries, plums and wild berries, interwoven with rose petals, licorice, subtle spice and a whisper of fine new oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet wonderfully supple and velvety, wrapping the tongue in a broad, enveloping wave of richly textured fruit. A fleshy core of sweet plum and red berry compote is lifted by lively acidity, keeping the wine energetic rather than heavy. Powdery, ultra-fine tannins provide seamless structure, carrying through to a long, perfumed and aromatic finish with lingering notes of red fruit, flowers and spice. Already surprisingly accessible in its youth, the 2019 has the depth, balance and concentration to age gracefully for 20–30 years or more in a proper cellar.

Production
Château Le Pin’s vineyard sits on classic Pomerol terroir: a gravel-rich surface layered over clay subsoils, a combination that helps Merlot retain freshness and balance even in warm, dry vintages like 2019. This tiny, meticulously farmed estate—around 2 hectares—relies on hand harvesting, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only the healthiest, most perfectly ripe grapes are used. The blend is Merlot-dominant with a small portion of Cabernet Franc to add lift, complexity and structure. In the cellar, vinification is carried out with a highly attentive, small‑scale approach, emphasizing gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and texture. The 2019 was matured in 70% new French oak, a hallmark of the estate today, adding polish and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the wine’s innate character.

Food & Serving
This luxurious Pomerol is at its best alongside refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, tournedos Rossini, beef Wellington, truffle risotto, or slow-braised veal and game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or black truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic lift and textural richness. For current drinking, decant gently 2–3 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles should be decanted more briefly and carefully to preserve their delicate, evolved nuances.

Producer
Château Le Pin was founded in the late 1970s by Belgian wine lover and businessman Jacques Thienpont, who acquired a small, neglected farm in Pomerol in 1979 and set about transforming it into a world‑class estate. The first vintage was produced in 1981, marking the beginning of Le Pin’s ascension from local curiosity to one of the most iconic and sought‑after names in Bordeaux. With its minute vineyard size, rigorous handwork, and focus on Merlot grown on gravel‑over‑clay soils, Le Pin quickly gained a cult following for wines of extraordinary intensity, silkiness and sensuality. Today, producing only a few thousand cases per year and practicing sustainable, terroir‑driven viticulture, Château Le Pin stands as one of Pomerol’s most revered references and a benchmark for small‑scale, ultra‑premium Bordeaux winemaking.
