Description

2019 Château Lagrange Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet impeccably refined left-bank Bordeaux, showcasing one of Saint-Julien’s most compelling modern vintages. Drawn from a single, contiguous estate that rises to the highest point in the appellation, this cuvée marries density, freshness and precision in a classically styled but vividly expressive wine. With a record 80% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this 2019 is set to be remembered as one of the château’s landmark releases.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Lagrange is deep, opaque garnet with a vivid purple rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: ripe black cherry and blackcurrant (cassis) are lifted by notes of violet, graphite and liquorice, with subtle hints of cedar, spice and cigar box emerging as it opens. On the palate, the entry is silky and creamy, quickly building into a full-bodied, structured wine with remarkable finesse. Intense black fruits—blackberry, cassis and dark plum—are wrapped in powerful yet velvety tannins, supported by a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps everything vibrant rather than heavy. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, tobacco leaf and a touch of pencil lead add complexity on the long, persistent finish. This 2019 has outstanding aging potential; while already alluring in its youth with a decant, it will gain further nuance and tertiary character (truffle, forest floor, leather) over the next 15–25 years and beyond in good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Lagrange lies entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, its vineyards spread over two north–south facing gravel ridges composed of Gunzian gravels of varying sizes, mixed with sand or iron-rich clay depending on parcel. At around 24 metres, the heart of the estate marks the highest point in Saint-Julien, and most plots benefit from efficient drainage systems that naturally limit vigour and concentrate the fruit. In 2019, a cool, wet spring gave way to a dry, warm summer with exceptional sunshine, leading to very small berries—the lowest berry weight in 36 years at Lagrange and consequently highly concentrated juice. Harvesting was carried out parcel by parcel over an exceptionally long picking window, with a deliberate pause between Merlot and Cabernet to wait for optimal phenolic maturity rather than simply technological ripeness. The final blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, vinified in temperature-controlled vats before aging in French oak barriques (a significant portion new), allowing the wine’s structure, aromatics and terroir character to integrate and evolve.

Food & Serving
This is a classic, structured Saint-Julien that shines alongside richly flavoured dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak with bone marrow, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If drinking in its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; with bottle age (10+ years), a gentle 30–45 minute decant will help separate any sediment and awaken the more delicate, tertiary aromas.

Producer
Château Lagrange is one of the most esteemed Grand Cru Classé estates of Saint-Julien, classified as a Third Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its large, contiguous vineyard—182 hectares in total, with 118 hectares under vine—has long been recognised for its superb gravel terroir and excellent natural drainage, factors that favour Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute to the château’s hallmark elegance and structure. Over the past several decades, significant investment in vineyard management and cellar technology has propelled Lagrange into the top tier of Saint-Julien producers, with a reputation for producing wines that are both classically styled and consistently high in quality. The 2019, with its record proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and exceptional concentration, stands as a testament to the estate’s modern expertise and its enduring significance in Bordeaux.
