Description
The 2019 Château Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Classé is a benchmark Pauillac and a compelling example of why Lafite sits at the pinnacle of Bordeaux. From an outstanding vintage, this wine combines classical structure with remarkable purity and finesse, promising decades of evolution. As a First Growth with centuries of prestige, it is both a collectible icon and a deeply rewarding wine to experience in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Lafite is a deep, vivid garnet with purple reflections, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy, opening with cassis, blackcurrant leaf, and ripe blackberry, followed by graphite, cedar, pencil shavings, and tobacco, all wrapped in delicate floral notes and a touch of warm spice.
On the palate, this is effortlessly elegant: medium to full-bodied, with pristine dark fruit—cassis, plum, and black cherry—interlaced with fine-grained tannins and a line of fresh, cool acidity. Subtle notes of cigar box, gravelly minerality, and savory dried herbs appear as it unfolds in the glass, giving classic Pauillac definition. The finish is long, precise, and poised, suggesting superb aging potential. While approachable after a long decant in its youth, this 2019 is built to evolve gracefully over 20–40 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Sourced from the historic Lafite plateau in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the 2019 Château Lafite Rothschild benefits from deep gravel soils over limestone and clay, which naturally restrict yields and produce Cabernet Sauvignon of great aromatic purity and structure. The blend typically features a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot and small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse over power. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels—predominantly new—for around 18–20 months, with meticulous selection to ensure only the finest lots are included in the grand vin.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Lafite is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, or classic French preparations like canard rôti and tournedos Rossini. It also shines alongside earthy sides—truffle-infused potato purée, wild mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to unfold. If opened in the next 5–10 years, decant for 2–3 hours to soften the tannins and release aromatic complexity; with extended bottle age, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is sufficient to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most revered names in the wine world and a cornerstone of Bordeaux’s First Growths, formally classified as Premier Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification. Winegrowing on the Lafite estate in Pauillac dates back at least to the 17th century, and the château has long been associated with elegance, longevity, and aristocratic finesse in Cabernet-based Bordeaux. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the mid-19th century, Lafite has played a defining role in establishing Pauillac’s global reputation, consistently producing some of the most sought-after and collectible wines on the planet. Its meticulous vineyard management, rigorous selection, and unwavering pursuit of refinement over sheer power have made Château Lafite Rothschild a benchmark for fine wine worldwide.
