Description
2019 Château La Négly L'Ancely from La Clape is a striking, single-minded expression of Mourvèdre grown on windswept Mediterranean slopes. This is a deeply characterful Languedoc red that combines southern richness with remarkable precision and mineral tension. Awarded 95/100 by Robert Parker, it stands as one of the benchmark wines of its appellation, showing just how refined and seductive Mourvèdre can be outside Bandol.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'Ancely 2019 shows a deep, shimmering ruby to garnet hue with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is generous yet finely etched: ripe raspberries and dark cherries take the lead, wrapped in notes of wild herbs (garrigue), thyme, and a whisper of dried lavender. Subtle saline and mineral nuances, plus a touch of spice and licorice, add complexity and a distinctly coastal character.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, silky and enveloping rather than heavy. The Mourvèdre shows its sensual side here: layers of red and black berry fruit, cherries, and a faint hint of plum are supported by supple tannins and a refined, savory backbone. Those herbal and salty notes return on the finish, making the wine feel vibrant and food-friendly rather than overly opulent. Still youthful, it already drinks beautifully but clearly has the structure and natural resistance to oxidation that Mourvèdre is known for. Expect it to develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years, gaining more leather, spice, and truffle notes with time in bottle.
Production
L'Ancely is sourced from selected Mourvèdre parcels in the La Clape appellation, a limestone massif rising above the Mediterranean in Languedoc. The vineyards benefit from intense sunshine, cooling sea breezes and a mosaic of stony, mineral-rich soils, all of which contribute to the wine’s precision and salinity. At Château La Négly, harvesting is typically done by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are used. The grapes are vinified with great care: gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and texture, followed by élevage in carefully chosen vessels (often a mix of barrels and larger formats) to build complexity and polish the tannins without overwhelming the wine’s natural freshness and mineral drive.
Food & Serving
This Mourvèdre-driven La Clape is superb alongside robust Mediterranean cuisine: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, grilled lamb chops, duck breast with cherry sauce, or herb-crusted pork. It also works beautifully with game birds, roasted vegetables, mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the savory and saline notes to unfurl fully; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful splash into a carafe will be enough to show it at its best.
Producer
Château La Négly sits on the shores of the Étang de Pissévache at the foot of the La Clape massif, one of Languedoc’s most exciting and distinctive terroirs. Owned by the Paux-Rosset family, the estate has been transformed into a regional reference under their stewardship, with Marion Paux-Rosset crafting the wines in close collaboration with renowned oenologist Claude Gros. The combination of varied soils, dramatic elevation changes and proximity to the sea has allowed La Négly to produce a wide range of wines that share a common thread: striking precision and a marked mineral character. Their efforts have been repeatedly recognized by leading critics, with several cuvées receiving exceptionally high scores from Robert Parker—up to 99 points—cementing Château La Négly’s reputation as one of the Languedoc’s top estates.
