Description
The 2019 Château La Fleur-Pétrus Pomerol is a poised, deeply expressive Right Bank Bordeaux from one of Pomerol’s most prized terroirs. Sitting on the plateau between Château Lafleur and Château Pétrus, this estate is renowned for Merlot-driven wines that combine finesse with impressive depth and longevity. The 2019 vintage captures that signature elegance with layered fruit, refined structure and a classic, age-worthy profile.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Fleur-Pétrus shows a dense, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is polished and precise, opening with ripe black cherries, plum and blackberry compote, followed by notes of violets, crushed graphite, fine cocoa, cedar and a subtle touch of truffle and warm earth.
On the palate, the wine is silky yet structured, with generous, pure dark fruit framed by refined tannins and a lively, well-integrated acidity. Layers of black cherry, damson and blackcurrant are joined by hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, baking spice and a gentle mineral edge that carries through to a long, persistent finish. Already harmonious in its youth, this 2019 has the density and balance to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with proper cellaring.
Production
Château La Fleur-Pétrus lies on the famed Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux, on gravelly and clay-rich soils with an important vein of iron-rich subsoil that gives the wines their characteristic depth and subtle spice. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and, in some vintages, a touch of Petit Verdot contributing aromatic lift and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection. In the cellar, vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse over power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion new), allowing it to gain texture, complexity and integration without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Pomerol is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal chops, duck breast, or classic French bistro fare like entrecôte with jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; more mature bottles can be gently decanted primarily to remove sediment shortly before serving.
Producer
Château La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most esteemed properties in Pomerol, long recognized for producing wines that marry the power of the plateau with remarkable elegance and perfume. The estate gained international renown under the stewardship of the Moueix family, who are also closely linked to some of the most iconic names on the Right Bank. Over the years, meticulous vineyard work, sensitive winemaking and a deep understanding of the terroir have cemented La Fleur-Pétrus as a benchmark for refined, age-worthy Pomerol. Its wines are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate a style that is both luxurious and classically Bordeaux in character.
