Description
From one of Lalande-de-Pomerol’s most admired estates, the 2019 Château La Fleur de Boüard Le Plus de La Fleur de Boüard is the domaine’s flagship cuvée and a benchmark for what this appellation can achieve. Made from 100% Merlot and crafted with the precision you’d expect from the de Boüard family of Château Angélus fame, it is a deeply seductive, modern Right Bank Bordeaux with impressive structure and pedigree. This is a wine conceived to rival top Pomerol, combining lush fruit with serious aging potential and a clear sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Le Plus is opaque, almost inky purple with a dense core and a gently fading rim, promising both youth and power. The nose is intense and layered: ripe black cherry and black plum leap from the glass, followed by notes of blackberry compote, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice, menthol, and a touch of espresso and fine cedar from high-quality French oak.
On the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied Merlot with a velvety, almost glycerol texture that coats the mouth without feeling heavy. Waves of dark cherry, black plum and blueberry are framed by well-integrated tannins and a vibrant, balancing freshness. Secondary notes of cocoa, graphite, sweet tobacco and a subtle minty lift add complexity as the wine opens. The long, persistent finish is marked by dark fruit, spice and refined oak. Still very youthful, the 2019 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gradually gaining more truffle, tobacco and savory nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Le Plus de La Fleur de Boüard is sourced from some of the estate’s oldest Merlot vines in Lalande-de-Pomerol, rooted in a mix of sand and clay that is particularly well-suited to this variety, echoing the terroirs of neighboring Pomerol. The vineyard is meticulously tended, with careful canopy management and strict yield control to concentrate flavor and ripeness in the grapes. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with multiple passes and severe sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries reach the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and/or small vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, tannin and aroma. The wine is then matured for around 18–24 months in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, imparting polish, depth and subtle toasty, spicy complexity while preserving the purity of the Merlot fruit.
Food & Serving
This opulent yet structured Bordeaux is a natural partner for rich, refined dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, duck breast, or a truffle-infused mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase both its aromatic complexity and textural richness. Decanting is strongly recommended, especially in its youth: give it at least 1–2 hours in a carafe to allow the tannins to soften and the layers of dark fruit, spice and chocolate to fully emerge.
Producer
Château La Fleur de Boüard was founded in 1998 by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner and renowned winemaker of the prestigious Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion. Under his guidance, La Fleur de Boüard has become one of the reference estates in Lalande-de-Pomerol, helping to elevate the appellation’s reputation for serious, Merlot-driven wines with real class. The estate’s 25 hectares of vines benefit from prime Right Bank terroir and are farmed with meticulous attention to detail, combining traditional Bordeaux savoir-faire with cutting-edge cellar technology. Le Plus de La Fleur de Boüard, crafted from the oldest Merlot vines and aged extensively in fine French oak, is the crown jewel of the property and regularly earns critical acclaim for its depth, polish and ability to rival top names from neighboring Pomerol.
