Description
2019 Château Hosanna Pomerol is one of the most exciting wines from the legendary Moueix stable, the same family behind the iconic Château Pétrus. Nestled on Pomerol’s plateau, Hosanna is often spoken of as a future Cheval Blanc of the Right Bank thanks to its remarkable old-vine Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The 2019 vintage showcases the château’s signature combination of lush richness, fine structure and polished elegance, confirming its status as one of the modern stars of Pomerol.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Hosanna presents a deep, opaque garnet core with a vivid ruby rim, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is immediately seductive, with generous aromas of ripe blackberries, sweet red berry fruit, and dark plums layered over notes of warm baking spices, mocha, and a creamy touch of new oak. Subtle hints of violet, graphite, and tobacco leaf emerge with air, adding complexity and a distinctly Right Bank character.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, rich, and velvety, with a broad, enveloping texture that feels both plush and precise. The ripe, dark fruit core is framed by supple, fine-grained tannins and beautifully integrated oak, offering flavors of black cherry, plum compote, cocoa, and exotic spice. There is an underlying freshness and minerality that keeps the wine vibrant and lifts the long, persistent finish. While already remarkably enjoyable in its youth, the structure and depth suggest excellent aging potential over 15–25 years, during which it will develop further layers of truffle, cigar box, and savory complexity.
Production
Château Hosanna is situated on Pomerol’s prized plateau, where a mosaic of gravel, clay, and iron-rich subsoils gives Merlot and Cabernet Franc remarkable depth and perfume. The estate is particularly renowned for its over 40-year-old Cabernet Franc vines, which contribute finesse and aromatic complexity reminiscent of the best parcels in Saint-Émilion. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small lots to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannin texture. Aging takes place in high-quality French oak barrels, a significant proportion of them new, allowing the wine to gain creaminess, spice, and polish without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the terroir.
Food & Serving
The 2019 Château Hosanna pairs beautifully with refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with truffle jus. It also shines alongside earthy dishes like wild mushroom risotto, braised short ribs, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help open up the aromatics and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before serving will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Hosanna is part of the illustrious Moueix portfolio, led by the Moueix family, one of the most influential names in Bordeaux. Based primarily on the Right Bank, they steward some of the world’s most coveted properties, including Château Pétrus, Trotanoy, and La Fleur-Pétrus in Pomerol, as well as top Saint-Émilion estates. Hosanna is a relatively recent but highly acclaimed addition to their holdings, quickly establishing itself as a reference point for modern Pomerol with its blend of power, perfume, and precision. Beyond Bordeaux, the Moueix name also resonates in Napa Valley through estates like Dominus and Ulysses, underscoring the family’s global reputation for crafting wines of depth, elegance, and exceptional aging potential.
