Description
La Clarté de Haut-Brion 2019 is the luminous white wine shared by the two First Growth neighbors, Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Crafted in tiny quantities, it offers a rare glimpse into the distinctive white wine style of one of Bordeaux’s most legendary terroirs. Floral, vibrant and beautifully composed, this is a refined white Bordeaux that balances generosity with poise and precision. The unique selling point of La Clarté de Haut-Brion lies in its origin: it is produced from the white vineyards of both Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, bringing together some of the finest gravel soils in Pessac-Léognan. Sauvignon Blanc leads the blend with its aromatic clarity and freshness, while Sémillon adds texture, depth and a silky, fruit-laden richness on the palate. Although a relatively recent label in the château’s history, the wine draws on centuries of know-how, and its prestige is underlined by the fact that La Clarté de Haut-Brion is famously poured at the Oscars ceremony each year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Clarté de Haut-Brion shows a bright, pale straw to light golden hue, shimmering with youthful energy. The nose is expressive yet finely etched, offering lifted notes of citrus blossom, ripe lemon and white peach, layered with hints of fresh-cut herbs, gooseberry, and a subtle stony minerality. The Sauvignon component is immediately recognizable, delivering clarity and aromatic intensity without ever becoming sharp or overpowering.
On the palate, the wine is both full and lively, with a satisfying, mouth-coating texture that remains refreshingly precise. Juicy stone fruits, citrus zest and hints of exotic fruits are wrapped in a creamy, gently rounded mid-palate contributed by Sémillon, which brings a sense of softness and quiet opulence. A discreet touch of oak, if present, is seamlessly integrated, supporting rather than masking the fruit. The finish is balanced and elegant, medium in length but impeccably composed, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and finesse. While already very enjoyable in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for up to a decade from the vintage, gaining more complexity, honeyed nuances and depth with a few years in bottle.
Production
La Clarté de Haut-Brion 2019 is born from the gravel and sand-gravel soils of Pessac-Léognan, a terroir famed for its excellent drainage and its ability to produce both great reds and exceptionally characterful dry whites. The white plots for this wine are planted primarily with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon (and, in some vintages, a touch of Sauvignon Gris), which benefit from careful vineyard management, including green harvesting and strict selection to ensure optimum ripeness and concentration. Harvesting is typically done by hand in small crates, parcel by parcel, so that each plot can be picked at its ideal moment of maturity. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the juice is usually fermented in temperature-controlled conditions, often in a proportion of French oak barrels to build texture and complexity. Aging on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage as appropriate, enhances creaminess, mouthfeel and aromatic nuance, while preserving the wine’s freshness and pure fruit character.
Food & Serving
This refined white Bordeaux is a versatile food partner that excels with elegant, subtly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with seafood such as scallops, lobster, poached turbot, grilled sea bass or sole, as well as oysters and other shellfish for those who enjoy a richer style of dry white. It also complements roasted chicken or guinea fowl, veal in a light cream sauce, and fine vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichoke hearts or spring vegetable risottos. Soft-rind cheeses like Brie, Chaource or a young goat’s cheese are also excellent companions. For optimal enjoyment, serve La Clarté de Haut-Brion 2019 at around 10–12°C (50–54°F). Younger bottles will benefit from being opened 20–30 minutes before serving; a short, gentle decant is optional but can help the aromatics open up in the first few years after release.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of the most storied names in Bordeaux, and the only estate from outside the Médoc to be included in the original 1855 Classification of First Growths. Situated in Pessac, just south of Bordeaux city, the estate has produced wine since at least the 16th century and has long been recognized for its distinctive gravelly terroir and its pioneering role in shaping Bordeaux winemaking. Alongside its renowned reds, Haut-Brion and its sister property, Château La Mission Haut-Brion, have built a formidable reputation for complex, age-worthy dry whites that rank among the finest in the world. La Clarté de Haut-Brion represents the combined white wine heritage of these two great estates, offering a taste of their elite terroir and craftsmanship in a slightly more approachable, but still thoroughly prestigious, expression.
