Description

The 2019 Château Gruaud-Larose Grand Cru Classé is a poised and beautifully classical Saint-Julien, offering the finesse and perfume that have made this estate a favorite among Left Bank purists. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, it marries power and elegance in a vintage that is already charming yet built for the cellar. As a historic Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Gruaud-Larose continues to prove why it stands among the great names of Bordeaux, combining tradition with increasingly meticulous, sustainable vineyard practices.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Gruaud-Larose shows a deep, dark ruby hue with a vivid purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is refined and layered: aromas of blackcurrant and black cherry are interwoven with crushed stone, tobacco leaf, cedar, and a subtle floral lift. With air, more complexity emerges—graphite, a touch of violets, and the faintest whisper of savory herbs. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Saint-Julien with a supple yet structured mouthfeel. Ripe black fruits—cassis, blackberry, and plum—are framed by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, well-integrated acidity. Notes of licorice and a hint of black pepper linger in the long, elegant finish, alongside nuances of cedar and mineral. Still youthful, the 2019 is approachable with proper aeration but clearly built for aging, with an anticipated drinking window stretching easily 10–25 years from the vintage, gaining in complexity and silkiness over time.

Production
The vineyards of Château Gruaud-Larose lie in the heart of Saint-Julien, behind Château Branaire-Ducru and beside Château Lagrange, on a superb gravel terroir formed from ancient stone deposits left by the Gironde some 700,000 years ago. This deep gravel over well-drained subsoils is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing both power and aromatic precision. The 2019 blend is approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, adding roundness, spice, and complexity. The estate has been moving toward organic viticulture, with parcels either certified or in conversion, emphasizing careful work in the vineyard and sustainable methods. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with strict selection. Vinification combines traditional Bordeaux methods with modern precision: temperature-controlled fermentations, gentle extraction to preserve finesse, and élevage in French oak barrels (with a judicious use of new oak) to refine tannins and build aromatic depth while maintaining the wine’s inherent elegance.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Saint-Julien is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine, and hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant—just enough to remove sediment and allow gentle aeration—will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Gruaud-Larose is one of the emblematic estates of Saint-Julien, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification. Long considered one of the key châteaux of the appellation, historically rivaled only by the once-undivided Léoville estate, Gruaud-Larose has built a reputation for wines that combine depth and structure with a distinctly refined, often described as ‘feminine’ elegance. Since 1997, the property has been owned by the Merlaut family, who have invested heavily in both vineyard and cellar, driving quality steadily upward and earning consistently high critical acclaim in recent vintages. Their commitment to organic vineyard management and terroir-driven winemaking has reinforced Gruaud-Larose’s standing as a reference point in Saint-Julien and a benchmark for classically styled, ageworthy Bordeaux.
