Description

The 2019 Château Grand Mayne Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Magnum is a generous 1.5L expression of one of the appellation’s most characterful estates, offering both immediate pleasure and serious cellar potential. Crafted from old vines on prime clay-limestone slopes and matured in fine French oak, it marries volume and richness with classic Right Bank elegance. Long owned by the Nony family and guided by renowned consultants Michel Rolland and Louis Mitjavile, this wine stands out in its category for depth, polish, and authenticity of terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Grand Mayne appears almost opaque, with a deep purple-black core that stains the sides of the glass – a visual cue to its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds gradually, revealing layers of ripe black plum, black cherry, and cassis, interwoven with dark chocolate–coated cherries, blackberry tart, and touches of licorice, cracked black pepper, and a whisper of unsmoked cigar and cedar. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, plush, and enveloping, with a core of dense black fruit – black plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant – framed by ripe, velvety tannins. There is a vibrant line of freshness that keeps the richness in check, bringing lift and precision to the finish. Subtle notes of graphite, cocoa, and spice emerge with air, leading to a long, perfumed aftertaste. In magnum format, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it should start drinking beautifully after a few years in bottle, and continue to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining complexity and secondary nuances of tobacco, leather, and truffle.

Production
Château Grand Mayne is rooted in some of Saint-Émilion’s finest terroirs on the western slope and foot of the hill, where clay and limestone soils provide both power and tension to the wines. The vines average around 35 years of age, with a blend composed of approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the estate’s focus on supple richness balanced by aromatic finesse. Harvesting is carefully timed and typically carried out parcel by parcel to capture ideal ripeness from each plot. After meticulous sorting, vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, followed by 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. This élevage, overseen with input from consultants Michel Rolland and Louis Mitjavile, adds structure, polish, and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s distinctive sense of place.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Château Grand Mayne Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Magnum is a natural partner for refined, yet hearty cuisine. It shines alongside roasted lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, duck breast, or slow-braised dishes like short ribs and osso buco. On the classic French side, pair it with entrecôte bordelaise, confit de canard, or game birds, while aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Mimolette, or mature Gouda make elegant companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In magnum format and at this young stage, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Grand Mayne is a historic Saint-Émilion estate whose roots stretch back several centuries, and which has been under the stewardship of the Nony family since 1934. Over generations, the family has invested steadily in the vineyard and cellar, elevating the property into one of the notable Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estates on the coveted western slopes of the appellation. Their philosophy is that a truly great wine must first be a great vineyard wine, and Grand Mayne is crafted as a pure reflection of its clay-limestone terroir. With the guidance of acclaimed consultants Michel Rolland and Louis Mitjavile, the château has become known for wines that combine the power and depth of Merlot with the tension and aromatic refinement of Cabernet Franc. Recent vintages have drawn attention for their balance of age-worthy structure and increased early accessibility, reinforcing Château Grand Mayne’s reputation as a standout source of classic, yet contemporary, Right Bank Bordeaux.
