Description

Bottled in an impressive 1.5L format, the 2019 Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé Magnum is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux that marries power, finesse, and longevity. From one of Saint‑Émilion’s most revered estates, this grand vin showcases the estate’s distinctive Cabernet-driven style in a superb vintage. Its magnum format further enhances aging potential, making it a standout choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Figeac presents a deep, radiant garnet core with a vibrant ruby rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and complex, opening with violets and rose petals before unfolding into ripe blueberries, blackcurrants, and black cherries, supported by subtle graphite, pencil shaving, and cigar box notes. Hints of spice, cedar, and a gentle minerality emerge with air, underlining its pedigree. On the palate, this is one of the most structured modern Figeacs, yet the tannins are extraordinarily fine-grained and silky. The blend of Cabernet Franc (36%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), and Merlot (30%) delivers a wine that is full-bodied, precise, and linear, with a beautiful sense of transparency and clarity of fruit. Flavors of dark berries, plum, and cassis are interwoven with graphite, tobacco, and a subtle savory edge, all carried by a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and long. The finish is extended, spicy, and refined. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential, easily evolving over 20–30 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of truffle, leather, and forest floor.

Production
Château Figeac’s 40 hectares of vineyards sit on one of Saint‑Émilion’s most distinctive terroirs, a rare mix of deep gravel outcrops over clay and limestone that favors Cabernet varieties in a region typically dominated by Merlot. The estate practices meticulous vineyard work, with careful plot selection and hand-harvesting to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches reach the cellar. Grapes from each parcel are vinified separately, using a combination of stainless-steel tanks and traditional wooden fermenters to preserve precision while adding texture and complexity. The grand vin is then aged in high-quality French oak barriques, a significant proportion new, where it develops structure, aromatic depth, and the trademark Figeac elegance before blending and bottling in magnum.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Château Figeac Magnum is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom ragout, and mature hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and complexity. Given its youth and structure, decant for 2–3 hours if drinking now; shorter decanting (1–1.5 hours) will suffice from around 2027 onward, while fully mature bottles may need only a gentle splash decant to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Figeac is one of Saint‑Émilion’s most historic and storied estates, with roots tracing back to a Roman villa in the 2nd century. The property has evolved over centuries, but its modern identity was shaped in the 19th century and consolidated under the stewardship of the Manoncourt family, who elevated Figeac to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. Unusually rich in gravel soils for the Right Bank, Figeac built its reputation on a Cabernet-focused style that brings together Left Bank structure with Right Bank charm. Today, the château is considered a reference point for age-worthy, classically styled Bordeaux, celebrated worldwide for its elegance, balance, and its flagship Grand Vin, alongside its second wine, Petit Figeac.
