Description
The 2019 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux, uniting power, precision, and polished elegance in a truly exceptional vintage. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it showcases the estate’s trademark finesse and remarkable purity of fruit. Long regarded as one of the great ‘super seconds’ of the Médoc, Ducru-Beaucaillou has built its reputation on wines that age majestically while remaining seductive in youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Ducru-Beaucaillou shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is complex and layered, opening with notes of cigar humidor, fresh cedar shavings, and graphite, followed by blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum. Subtle nuances of black truffle, crushed violets, and a touch of exotic spice emerge with air, adding sophistication and depth.
On the palate, this is very much in a Pauillac-inspired style: focused, structured, and classically shaped. The core of ripe black fruit is framed by finely chiseled, polished tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine both power and lift. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry are joined by hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and savory minerality, leading into a long, saline, and precise finish. Still youthful and tightly knit, it promises superb aging potential—expect it to start showing real harmony after about 8–10 years in bottle and to evolve gracefully for two to three decades or more under proper cellaring.
Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the large, beautiful pebbles ("beaux cailloux") that define the estate’s gravelly terroir in Saint-Julien, overlooking the Gironde estuary. These deep gravel soils, mixed with sand and stones over a well-drained subsoil, are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, promoting low yields, excellent ripening, and a distinctive mineral backbone. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small, selective passes to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit is brought to the winery. After careful sorting, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to preserve the character of each plot. The 2019 vintage was then matured for around 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels, a signature of Ducru-Beaucaillou that contributes to its refined structure, aromatic complexity, and impressive longevity.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a classic partner for refined meat dishes and richly flavored cuisine. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef Wellington, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or pigeon, as well as truffle-infused dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to unfold; as the wine matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will be sufficient mainly to remove any sediment and gently awaken the wine.
Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most revered estates in Bordeaux, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification and long considered among the elite of the Médoc. Located in Saint-Julien, the château has a history dating back to the 18th century and has been under the stewardship of the Borie family since the mid-20th century. Their meticulous vineyard work, strict selection, and investment in modern yet sensitive winemaking have elevated Ducru-Beaucaillou to ‘super second’ status, often rivaling the region’s First Growths in quality and critical acclaim. Today, the estate is widely recognized for producing deeply sophisticated, ageworthy wines that epitomize the elegance and balance of top-tier Left Bank Bordeaux.
