Description
2019 Château Croix de Labrie Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a powerful yet finely sculpted Right Bank Bordeaux, crafted from meticulously farmed biodynamic vines. This tiny-production cuvée, dominated by Merlot and aged in 100% new French oak, is all about intensity, precision and energy in the glass. As a Grand Cru from one of Saint-Émilion’s most prized terroirs, it offers both immediate seduction and serious cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a very deep purple-black hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is strikingly expressive, layering ripe blackberry and blueberry with notes of pine needle, nutmeg, allspice and a twist of white pepper, all wrapped in a subtle cloak of fine oak spice.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, tightly coiled and impeccably focused, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by ultra-fine yet powerful tannins. The wine pulses with energy and drive, remaining precise and never heavy despite its depth. Flavors of black plum, blackberry compote, baking spices and a hint of cedar evolve with air, leading into a long, structured finish. This is a wine built to evolve: while already impressive, it will gain polish, complexity and harmony with several years in the cellar and is best approached from 2026 onward.
Production
The grapes for Château Croix de Labrie are sourced from prime parcels in the Saint-Émilion appellation, where clay-limestone soils give both structure and aromatic complexity, particularly to Merlot. The estate farms its vineyards biodynamically, focusing on soil vitality and low yields to achieve maximum purity and concentration of fruit. The 2019 blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation is managed with great precision to extract fine tannins and preserve freshness, after which the wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels, adding refinement, depth and subtle spice without overshadowing the character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a superb partner to richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or slow-braised short ribs. It also shines alongside truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragout, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended over the next few years to soften the tannins and open up its intricate layers of fruit and spice.
