Description
2019 Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc is a refined white Bordeaux from one of the Left Bank’s most storied estates, better known for its grand red wines. This cuvée shows just how seriously Cos d’Estournel takes its white wine program, combining precision, depth and freshness in a remarkably polished style. Crafted in limited quantities, it’s a luxurious, cellar‑worthy white that rivals many top Graves and Pessac-Léognan bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cos d’Estournel Blanc is a luminous pale gold with subtle green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is highly expressive: lifted aromas of lemon zest, pink grapefruit and yuzu mingle with white peach, pear, and hints of passion fruit. Layered beneath the fruit are delicate notes of jasmine, lemongrass, crushed stone and a discreet touch of fine oak—vanilla bean, toast and a whisper of smoke.
On the palate, this is both generous and taut, with a sleek, silky texture balanced by a racy, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of citrus and stone fruits are joined by ripe nectarine and a saline, almost Atlantic sea-breeze character that gives tension and length. The oak is beautifully integrated, adding creaminess and spice without ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, precise and mineral-driven, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable now for its vibrant fruit and energy, it will gain complexity, nuance and honeyed, nutty notes over the next 8–12 years, and can comfortably evolve beyond that in good cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Cos d’Estournel Blanc is sourced from carefully selected parcels in the northern Médoc, where gravelly, well-drained soils over limestone and clay help Sauvignon Blanc express purity and tension, while Sémillon contributes body and complexity. The blend typically leans on Sauvignon Blanc, supported by Sémillon to build mid-palate richness and ageability. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness in small lots to preserve aromatics and avoid oxidation. After a gentle pressing, the must is clarified and fermented at controlled temperatures, often in French oak barrels (a proportion new), which adds texture and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit. The wine then matures on fine lees, with bâtonnage as needed, to enhance creaminess, depth and complexity, before careful blending and bottling to capture both precision and elegance.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Cos d’Estournel Blanc is a superb match for refined seafood and subtly rich dishes. Think oysters, scallop carpaccio, lobster with citrus butter, turbot, sole meunière, or elegant sushi and sashimi. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, fine goat’s cheeses, aged Comté, and dishes featuring herbs, fennel, or asparagus—often tricky with wine, but handled well by this wine’s freshness and structure. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), so the aromatics can fully open. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, can help the wine unfurl its layers and integrate oak and fruit, making it an excellent choice for the table or special occasions.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the great Second Growth estates of the 1855 Classification, located just north of Pauillac in Saint-Estèphe. Founded in the early 19th century by the visionary Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, known as the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” for his exotic architectural style and export ambitions, Cos quickly built a reputation for powerful yet refined red wines. In recent decades, under ambitious and quality-driven ownership, the estate has invested heavily in both vineyard management and a state-of-the-art gravity-flow cellar. The decision to produce a serious white wine underscores Cos’s broader aim: to craft benchmark wines of the Médoc that stand with the finest in Bordeaux. Cos d’Estournel Blanc has since emerged as one of the most sought-after dry whites from the Left Bank, admired by critics and collectors for its precision, depth and capacity to age gracefully.
