Description
The 2019 Château Clos Saint Martin Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a jewel-box of a wine from one of the smallest classified estates on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. Farmed from just 1.33 hectares of prime clay-limestone slopes, this Merlot-driven blend delivers both precision and opulence in equal measure. Bordering the famed Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse and overlooking the village cemetery, Clos Saint Martin is a tiny but revered terroir with a long track record of producing deeply expressive, ageworthy wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a radiant, deep ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with vivid aromas of ripe cherries and wild berries, lifted by notes of violets, crushed flowers and a gentle sprinkle of sweet baking spices. Subtle touches of graphite, cocoa and a whisper of vanilla and cedar emerge with air, adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and layered yet beautifully poised. A fleshy core of dark cherry, plum and blackberry is wrapped in fine, powdery tannins and supported by lively, luminous acidity that keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. The texture is silky and refined, with energy and tension running through the mid-palate, leading to a long, precise finish marked by mineral notes from the limestone soils and a lingering echo of red fruits and floral spice. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential; expect it to develop gracefully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances of truffle, tobacco and forest floor.
Production
Clos Saint Martin sits on steep clay-limestone slopes on the prized Saint-Émilion plateau, where thin topsoils over hard limestone bedrock give naturally low yields, superb drainage and a distinctive mineral edge to the wines. The 2019 is a Merlot-based blend complemented by around 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, tailoring Merlot’s plushness with Cabernet’s structure and aromatic lift. Given the estate’s tiny size, the grapes were picked in four separate passes to ensure optimal ripeness from each parcel, allowing precise selection. Rather than fermenting in tank, the must is fermented directly in barrel—a deliberate choice for such small volumes—encouraging gentle extraction, fine-grained tannins and a seamless integration of oak. Meticulous élevage in carefully chosen barrels further polishes the wine’s texture while preserving the purity of fruit and the distinct voice of its limestone terroir.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a natural partner for refined dishes that echo its depth and elegance. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, veal with truffle jus, or slow-cooked beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the aromatic complexity and the freshness on the palate. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its first decade will help the wine unfold its floral and spicy nuances; older bottles (10+ years) should be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment while preserving their more delicate tertiary aromas.
Producer
Château Clos Saint Martin is one of the smallest and most intimate Grand Cru Classé properties in Saint-Émilion, yet it holds a prestigious position thanks to its exceptional location on the limestone plateau and its consistently high quality. Nestled beside estates such as Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse, it benefits from the same coveted terroir that has made the area famous among Bordeaux connoisseurs. Over the years, Clos Saint Martin has built a reputation for crafting limited-production wines of remarkable concentration, finesse and longevity, wines that capture the essence of Saint-Émilion’s clay-limestone soils with a modern sense of precision. Its rarity, coupled with its critical acclaim, has cemented the château’s status as a collector’s favorite and a benchmark for small-scale excellence in the region.
