Description
The 2019 Château Clinet Magnum captures the power and polish that have made this Pomerol estate one of the most sought-after names on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Bottled in an impressive 1.5L format, it’s a sublime choice for the cellar, special occasions, or collectors who value both pedigree and aging potential. This vintage combines dense Merlot-driven fruit with precision, structure and a modern sense of refinement that showcases Pomerol at its best.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Clinet is an opaque, inky purple-black, hinting immediately at its concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is generous and expressive, bursting with ripe black plums, blackberry and blueberry compote, layered with notes of crushed raspberries, licorice, dark chocolate and a subtle touch of sweet spice and violets.
On the palate, this is rich, full-bodied and impeccably polished, with plush, velvety tannins that cloak the palate without ever feeling heavy. The core of dark, ripe fruit is framed by just the right amount of freshness, giving lift and precision to the wine’s impressive depth. Hints of cocoa, licorice and subtle oak toast emerge on the long, persistent finish. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from around 2026, but can comfortably evolve and gain complexity over 15–25 years or more if properly cellared.
Production
Château Clinet’s vineyards lie on the prime plateau of Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where a mosaic of gravel, clay and iron-rich soils provides ideal conditions for Merlot, supported here by Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate covers roughly 11 hectares, predominantly planted with Merlot, with smaller parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are hand-harvested between late September and early October (23 September to 3 October in 2019), then meticulously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The 2019 blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for about 16 months in French oak barriques, 75% of which are new, using the OXOLINE system to minimize disturbance of the wine and allow a more gentle, controlled maturation that enhances texture, complexity and integration of oak.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Pomerol is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, duck breast or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with earthy components like truffle, wild mushrooms and root vegetables, as well as well-aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in the near term; as it ages, a shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Clinet traces its origins back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the larger Château de la Couronne estate established in the 16th century. It emerged as a distinct property in the early 18th century under the Constant family, and later, under the Arnaud family in the 19th century, Clinet earned recognition for producing wines of notably high quality and helped cement Pomerol’s reputation for world-class Merlot. Today, Château Clinet is regarded as one of the leading estates in Pomerol, consistently winning critical acclaim for its flagship wine and crafting powerful yet silky, ageworthy reds. With limited production, a track record of great vintages—including benchmark years such as 1989, 1990, 2009, 2010 and 2015—and a well-regarded second wine, “Ronan by Clinet,” the estate holds a prominent place among Bordeaux collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
