Description

The 2019 Château Beychevelle Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé Magnum captures everything collectors love about this storied Left Bank estate: grace, depth and classic Médoc refinement in a larger, cellar-worthy format. Drawn from some of Saint-Julien’s finest terroirs and bottled in 1.5L, this wine offers an impressive balance of generosity and structure, ideal for both special occasions and long-term aging. Once nicknamed the “Versailles of the Médoc”, Château Beychevelle marries architectural grandeur with a maritime heritage that still defines its elegant, finely etched style today.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Beychevelle shows a deep, garnet-purple colour with bright ruby reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure red and black fruit – think ripe raspberries, redcurrants and blackberries – layered with notes of pencil shavings, cedar, sweet baking spices and a touch of graphite, echoing its classic Saint-Julien origins. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a generous core of juicy fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins. The raspberry and currant character is joined by hints of plum, cassis, tobacco leaf and subtle vanilla from well-judged oak. A lively, mouth-watering acidity keeps everything in balance, leading into a broad, persistent finish that fans out with spice and mineral notes. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential: enjoyable in its expressive youth within the next 4–6 years, but capable of evolving gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Château Beychevelle’s vineyards lie on the classic deep gravel and clay-gravel soils of Saint-Julien, close to the Gironde estuary, whose moderating influence helps achieve slow, even ripening and the estate’s hallmark finesse. The grand vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding aromatic complexity and structure. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, usually by hand, allowing for careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance rather than brute power, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to integrate tannins and add subtle spice and texture. Only the finest lots are selected for Château Beychevelle, ensuring a wine that faithfully reflects its noble terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Beychevelle Magnum is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled or roasted beef, game birds, and veal with mushroom jus. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring earthy elements like truffles, wild mushrooms or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and magnum format, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially when enjoyed within its first decade.

Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of the most emblematic properties of Saint-Julien, classified as a Fourth Growth (Quatrième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification. Its name and iconic label – depicting a ship lowering its sails in homage to a powerful admiral once resident here – reflect the estate’s deep maritime and aristocratic roots. Often referred to as the “Versailles of the Médoc” for its grand architecture and manicured grounds, Beychevelle has long been renowned for producing wines of elegance, aromatic complexity and impeccable balance. Since 2011, the estate has been under the stewardship of Pierre Castel and the Japanese group Suntory (also owners of Château Lagrange), who have invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology while preserving the property’s traditional style. Today, Château Beychevelle stands as a benchmark for refined, age-worthy Saint-Julien, consistently sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
