Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, with a bright, youthful rim hinting at its long life ahead. The nose opens slowly but precisely, unfurling layers of wild blueberries and ripe raspberries, followed by violets, rose petals and a gentle hint of forest floor. Subtle, creamy new oak frames the fruit rather than dominates it, adding notes of fine spice, cocoa and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet beautifully composed, with a seamless, layered texture. A lively core of fresh blue and red fruit is supported by lifted acidity and very fine, powdery tannins that feel almost chalk-infused, echoing the limestone plateau. The wine glides across the palate, finishing long, saline and precise, with a lingering mineral snap and floral lift. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should begin to drink well from around 2026, but will comfortably develop further complexity over 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
Château Beauséjour is perched high on the fabled limestone plateau above the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, vines rooted in a mix of pure limestone and clay-limestone soils give naturally low yields, intense concentration and a distinctive chalky minerality. The roughly 6.5-hectare vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot (around 81%), with Cabernet Franc (about 16%) and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 3%), all carefully tended and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified with meticulous care, typically in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—of which a portion are new—for an extended period, allowing the components to knit together and the estate’s hallmark elegance, depth and mineral tension to emerge.

This 2019 Saint-Émilion is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that mirror its depth and structure. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, confit duck, or slow-braised veal and beef stews. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes and hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Ossau-Iraty. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and freshness; in magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open, while older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.
