Le Carillon de l'Angélus 2019 is the refined second wine of the legendary Château Angélus, offering a taste of Saint-Émilion’s elite “Classé A” pedigree in a more approachable, earlier-drinking style. Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Le Carillon de l’Angélus shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red colour with a youthful sheen, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and seductive, opening with floral notes of lavender and rose petals, layered over aromas of redcurrant jelly, blackberry tart and black raspberry, with subtle accents of baking spices and freshly ground black pepper. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and wonderfully poised, combining silky elegance with a precise, mineral backbone. Juicy black fruits – blackberry, black raspberry and ripe plum – unfold in layers, supported by finely knit, finessed tannins and a lively freshness that keeps the wine energetic rather than heavy. Hints of spice, graphite and a touch of oak add complexity without overwhelming the pure fruit. The finish is long, clean and focused, with lingering dark fruit and floral notes. Already charming in its youth, this 2019 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years under good cellar conditions, gaining further complexity and softness over time.

Production
Le Carillon de l’Angélus is sourced from the same privileged slopes and foothills that surround Château Angélus on the southern side of Saint-Émilion, a natural amphitheatre that traps warmth and promotes optimal ripening. The soils are a finely tuned mix of clay and limestone, with Merlot planted on the more clay-rich flanks and Cabernet Franc on sand-clay-limestone parcels at the foot of the slope, benefiting from excellent natural drainage. Grapes are carefully harvested at optimal maturity, parcel by parcel, to preserve purity of fruit and balance. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with a focus on finesse and precision, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, around 60% of which are new. This élevage polishes the tannins and adds subtle spice and structure while allowing the estate’s signature floral, mineral character to shine through.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Le Carillon de l’Angélus is a versatile gastronomic partner, particularly well-suited to refined dishes featuring lamb, veal, roast poultry, duck or beef fillet, as well as earthy preparations with mushrooms, truffles or root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with dishes based on lentils, grilled vegetables and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, while older bottles can be gently served without extended aeration.
