Description

The 2019 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion in magnum format captures the full prestige and sensuality of one of Bordeaux’s most coveted wines. This is Angélus at its most refined: sleek, powerful and exquisitely polished, presented in the ideal large format for long, graceful aging and special occasions. As one of just a handful of Saint-Émilion estates ever elevated to the top ‘A’ tier of the classification, it represents the pinnacle of right-bank winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Angélus shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple core, almost opaque, with a vibrant rim hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose is both intense and finely etched: layers of ripe blackberries, black cherries and blueberry compote are interwoven with violets, graphite, fine cigar box, sweet spice, truffle nuances and a subtle mineral echo from the limestone-rich soils. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably poised, with superfine, cashmere-like tannins that wrap around a core of sweet, ripe dark fruit. Notes of blue fruit, blackcurrant, plum and black cherry meld with hints of cocoa, espresso, licorice, black truffle and a touch of Asian spice. The mid-palate is dense and concentrated, but there is a refreshing, mineral line and vibrant acidity that keep everything lifted and precise. The finish is long, silky and mouthcoating, with lingering tones of dark berries, spice and wet stone. In magnum, this 2019 has outstanding aging potential: it will start to show beautifully from around 2027–2028 and continue to develop complexity for at least two to three decades beyond that.

Production
Château Angélus sits in a natural south-facing amphitheatre at the foot of Saint-Émilion, a privileged terroir where heat accumulates and ripening is naturally enhanced. The vineyard benefits from an ideal interplay of clay and limestone, giving excellent water regulation and a strong mineral imprint; Merlot is rooted in the more clay-dominant flanks for plushness and depth, while Cabernet Franc thrives on the sand-clay-limestone parcels at the foot of the slope, adding structure, aromatic lift and tension. Grapes are meticulously harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only pristine fruit reaches the winery. Vinification typically combines a mix of temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse in the tannins. The grand vin is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it undergoes élevage that polishes texture, integrates oak spice, and enhances the wine’s natural complexity without overwhelming its terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Angélus magnum is perfectly suited to refined, richly flavored dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or pigeon with truffle accents, and classic French preparations such as tournedos Rossini or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms, black truffle, and root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and finesse. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient to open the bouquet and separate any sediment.

Producer
Château Angélus has been in the hands of the Boüard de Laforest family for eight generations and stands today as one of the true icons of Saint-Émilion. Under the dedicated leadership of figures like Hubert de Boüard and now Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the estate has steadily refined its viticulture and winemaking to reach the very top echelon of Bordeaux. In 2012, their efforts were crowned with the promotion of Angélus to the elite ‘Premier Grand Cru Classé A’ status, a distinction shared by only a handful of estates in Saint-Émilion. Stéphanie, the third woman to lead the property, upholds a legacy built on integrity, hard work and humility, ensuring Angélus remains synonymous with timeless quality, innovation in the vineyard and cellar, and wines that regularly achieve global critical acclaim.
