Description

From one of Barolo’s most hallowed hilltops, the 2019 Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche captures the purity and finesse that have made Ceretto a benchmark name in Piedmont. This is a single-cru Barolo from a top vintage, where power, perfume and precision come together in striking harmony. Produced in tiny quantities from the lofty Bricco Rocche vineyard, it represents the most refined and collectible side of Nebbiolo in the Langhe. Bricco Rocche is Ceretto’s jewel: a monopole cru owned entirely by the estate, sitting high above Castiglione Falletto with panoramic views over Barolo. Ceretto was among the pioneers of bottling Barolo from individual crus back in the late 20th century, and Bricco Rocche quickly became one of the region’s most coveted names. The winery, expanded in 2000 with its now-iconic glass cube overlooking the hills, is both a symbol of modern Barolo and a guardian of its deep-rooted traditions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Barolo Bricco Rocche shows a luminous, garnet core with translucent ruby edges, typical of great Nebbiolo from a classic year. The nose is exceptionally pure and detailed: dried roses and violets, red cherries and wild strawberries, followed by layers of sweet spices, star anise, cedar shavings, fine tobacco leaf and a gentle hint of orange zest and dried herbs. As it opens, delicate notes of underbrush, licorice and subtle tar add further complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and incredibly refined, with that lift and precision only top Barolo can deliver. The layered red fruit—sour cherry, pomegranate and raspberry—melds seamlessly with savory notes of spice, tobacco and mineral-laced earth. Tannins are firm yet ultra-fine, tightly woven rather than aggressive, giving the wine a poised, architectural structure. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, stretching the finish into a long, resonant echo of flowers, spice and citrus peel. Still youthful and coiled, the 2019 has outstanding aging potential; it will benefit from cellaring and should evolve beautifully over 15–25+ years, gaining truffle, leather and forest floor complexity with time.

Production
Bricco Rocche is perched on one of the highest ridges of Castiglione Falletto, a true ‘bricco’ (hilltop) that combines white calcareous marls and compact clays with excellent exposure and ventilation—perfect for slow, even ripening of Nebbiolo. The vines here dig deep into poor, mineral soils, which translate into the wine’s tension and finely etched aromatics. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar at the futuristic yet discreetly integrated Castiglione Falletto winery, the grapes undergo a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration to gently extract color, tannin and aroma. Aging traditionally takes place in large oak vessels (and a judicious use of smaller barrels where appropriate), allowing the cru’s character to shine without overt wood influence, and the wine rests for several years before release to harmonize structure and bouquet.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s combination of elegance and depth makes it a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes. Think braised veal shank, slow-cooked beef cheeks, roast lamb with rosemary, or classic Piedmontese specialities such as vitello tonnato, tajarin with white truffle, and brasato al Barolo. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, porcini mushroom risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano, and hard alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the floral and spicy notes to unfold; with more bottle age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Ceretto is one of Barolo’s most recognized and respected names, a family-run estate that helped usher the region into the modern era while keeping a firm hold on tradition. Founded in the mid-20th century, the Ceretto family made a visionary bet on single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco, acquiring prized parcels in renowned crus such as Brunate, Cannubi, Prapò and Bricco Rocche at a time when the concept of cru bottlings was still emerging. Their winery in Castiglione Falletto, established in 1982 and expanded in 2000 with the striking glass cube that has become an architectural landmark, serves as the nerve center for vinifying and aging some of the Langhe’s most prestigious wines. Today, Ceretto is celebrated not only for its high-quality Barolo and Barbaresco but also for its broader range of Langhe wines, its commitment to careful vineyard work, and its role in cementing Piedmont’s status as one of the world’s great fine-wine regions.
