Description
The 2019 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova Methusalem (6L) is a commanding, cellar‑worthy expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most sought‑after crus. Bottled in an impressive 6‑liter format, this is a statement wine made for long aging, special occasions, and serious collectors. Tenuta Nuova is Casanova di Neri’s visionary single‑vineyard project, created to showcase a more contemporary, powerful side of Brunello while remaining deeply rooted in Montalcino’s traditions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Tenuta Nuova shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and structure. The nose is intense and layered: ripe red cherries and blackberries meet wild herbs, blood orange zest, violets, and hints of sweet spice, tobacco leaf, and cedar, backed by subtle balsamic and mineral notes.
On the palate, this Brunello is full‑bodied yet poised, with concentrated red and dark fruit wrapped in fine, polished tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, plum, and raspberry coulis mingle with notes of licorice, dried rose, leather, and graphite, leading into a long, focused finish that shows impressive tension and freshness. The structure and balance of the 2019 vintage, combined with the large Methusalem format, promise a very long evolutionary arc: expect this wine to develop gracefully over 20–30 years or more, with tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers, and cigar box emerging with time.
Production
Tenuta Nuova is sourced from meticulously selected plots on the southeastern side of Montalcino, where the combination of altitude, good diurnal range, and well‑drained, stony soils (rich in galestro and other rocky components) gives Sangiovese its depth, aromatic lift, and refined tannic structure. Grapes are typically hand‑harvested in small crates to preserve berry integrity, followed by careful selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation usually takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel or conical vats, with a long maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in carefully chosen oak (often a mix of large casks and smaller barrels) for an extended period before bottling, followed by additional bottle aging to meet Brunello di Montalcino DOCG requirements and to refine its texture and complexity—particularly important for a grand format like the Methusalem.
Food & Serving
This Methusalem bottle is ideal for large gatherings and celebratory meals, pairing beautifully with rich, savory dishes. Think classic Tuscan fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, game birds, and aged pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano; it also works wonderfully alongside truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms, and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking, and even longer for maximum aromatic expression, especially from such a large format.
Producer
Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, Casanova di Neri has grown from a small family estate into one of the most respected and acclaimed producers in Montalcino. Located on the eastern side of the appellation, the winery is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, modern yet sensitive winemaking, and for flagship wines like Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto, which regularly receive top scores from international critics. Casanova di Neri helped define a more contemporary style of Brunello—combining purity of fruit, depth, and polish—while maintaining a strong sense of place. Today, under the leadership of the Neri family, the estate is considered a benchmark for Brunello di Montalcino and a reference point for collectors seeking both consistency and world‑class quality.
