Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2019 Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino is a pure, expressive take on Sangiovese from one of the most respected estates in northern Montalcino. This Rosso is the estate’s younger, more versatile sibling to their Brunello, offering immediate charm without sacrificing depth or pedigree. It captures the balance between freshness, structure, and elegance that has made Canalicchio di Sopra a benchmark name in the region since the early 1960s.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Rosso di Montalcino shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby red with youthful highlights, particularly striking in a magnum where the color remains especially vivid. The nose is refined yet generous, with aromas of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and red plum layered with notes of violet, dried herbs, sweet spice, and a subtle earthy-mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with a beautiful interplay between juicy, vivid fruit and taut structure. Flavors of cherry, cranberry and pomegranate are framed by sweet, silky tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything focused and precise. Hints of tobacco leaf, rose petal and a gentle savory note emerge on the long, clean finish. While designed for earlier enjoyment than Brunello, the 2019 has the balance and structure to age gracefully for 6–10 years, with the magnum format offering even greater longevity and a slower, more harmonious evolution.

Production
Canalicchio di Sopra farms its vineyards in the cooler, northern sector of Montalcino, with parcels in the Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli zones. The Rosso di Montalcino comes mainly from younger Sangiovese vines rooted in clay-rich soils loaded with magnesium, iron and manganese, which contribute both power and a distinct mineral tension to the wine. Grapes are harvested by hand, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with daily pump-overs to gently extract color, aroma and fine tannins. Maceration on the skins typically lasts 15–20 days, after which the wine is aged for around 12 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks (50 and 25 hl) and 750-liter French oak barrels. Only fruit from the youngest vineyards is used for this Rosso, while grapes from parcels over 10 years old are destined for Brunello and Brunello Riserva, ensuring that the Rosso showcases youthful fruit purity and naturally supple tannins.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Rosso di Montalcino magnum is an ideal centerpiece for the table, pairing beautifully with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle al ragù, grilled or roasted lamb, bistecca alla fiorentina, and braised pork or veal. It also complements earthy mushroom risotto, aged pecorino and other firm, savory cheeses, as well as charcuterie and herb-roasted poultry. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially from magnum, to allow the bouquet to open fully and the tannins to soften further.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and is now in its third generation of family stewardship, seamlessly blending modern precision with deep respect for tradition. Located in the northern part of the Montalcino commune, the estate farms about 60 hectares of land, including 15 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves, and has played an important role in defining the elegant, ageworthy style of northern Montalcino Sangiovese. With prized holdings in Canalicchio di Sopra and the famed Montosoli area, Canalicchio di Sopra has earned a reputation for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino that consistently attract critical acclaim, standing as one of the reference producers for purity, finesse and terroir expression in the region.
