Description
The 2019 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli Jeroboam (3L) is a collector’s bottling from one of Montalcino’s most revered crus. Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grown on the famed Montosoli hill, this wine combines precision, depth, and a striking sense of place. Presented in an impressive 3-liter Jeroboam, it is ideal for long-term cellaring and special occasions where both pedigree and presence matter.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vigna Montosoli shows a luminous, deep ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim, hinting at its classical Brunello structure. The nose is refined and layered, offering aromas of wild cherry, red plum, and dried rose petals intertwined with notes of blood orange zest, sweet tobacco, balsamic herbs, and subtle spice from careful aging.
On the palate, this is a poised and energetic Brunello: concentrated yet lifted, with fine-grained tannins framing flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate, and red currant, followed by hints of licorice, cedar, and earthy minerality. The finish is long, savory, and precise, with a saline edge typical of Montosoli’s limestone-rich soils. In Jeroboam format, the wine evolves more slowly, enhancing its aging potential: it should drink beautifully from around 2026 onward and continue to develop complexity for two to three decades or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Vigna Montosoli is situated on the northern slope of Montalcino, an area celebrated for its cooler exposures and complex marl and limestone soils that produce particularly elegant and aromatic Sangiovese. Canalicchio di Sopra works with low yields and meticulous vineyard care, favoring manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. In the cellar, the Sangiovese Grosso is vinified traditionally, with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic detail. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian or French oak casks, allowing terroir and vintage character to shine rather than overt oak influence, before being bottled in Jeroboams to preserve freshness and longevity.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb with herbs, braised veal shank, or game birds with truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, and mushroom-based dishes such as porcini risotto. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity, especially when pouring from a Jeroboam. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles will need a more delicate, shorter decant primarily to separate sediment.
Producer
Canalicchio di Sopra is a historic Montalcino estate founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, located in the northern sector of the appellation, an area long admired for producing some of Brunello’s most elegant and ageworthy wines. Over the decades, the winery has become closely associated with top terroirs such as Montosoli, helping to cement the hill’s reputation as one of the great crus of Montalcino. Now guided by subsequent generations, Canalicchio di Sopra remains firmly rooted in a classic, terroir-driven style, consistently earning high critical praise and a loyal following among collectors for its refined, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino bottlings.
