Description

The 2019 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili is a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most revered crus and most legendary producers. Sourced from the famed Asili vineyard, this wine marries laser-like precision with classical elegance, delivering a Barbaresco of remarkable purity, focus, and depth. Crafted only in vintages that meet Giacosa’s exacting standards, it is a bottle that serious collectors and lovers of traditional Piedmont seek out year after year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Asili shows a luminous, transparent garnet hue with brick reflections toward the rim, typical of great Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is intensely perfumed and finely etched, with aromas of wild red berries, sour cherry, and pomegranate layered over violet, rose petal, and hints of candied orange peel. Subtle notes of sweet spices, dried herbs, and a faint undertone of earth and cedar add complexity without ever weighing the wine down. On the palate, this Barbaresco is all about clarity and precision: medium-bodied yet tightly woven, with a silken texture that glides across the tongue. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry, and blood orange are framed by very fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, taut, and elegantly persistent, leaving impressions of florals, citrus zest, and mineral purity. While already showing exquisite balance, this is a wine built for the cellar; it will benefit from at least 4–5 years of aging and should evolve beautifully for 15–20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Asili is widely regarded as one of Barbaresco’s greatest terroirs, a gently sloping hill with calcareous marl soils that yield wines of perfume, finesse, and remarkable longevity. Bruno Giacosa works traditionally in the vineyard, favoring careful hand harvesting to select only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo clusters at low yields. In the cellar, the approach is classic and restrained: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by extended maturation in large, neutral botti (large oak casks) in Giacosa’s historic Neive cellars. This combination of top-tier cru, meticulous selection, and traditional élevage allows the Asili vineyard character to shine with striking transparency.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb partner to refined, savory dishes that complement its structure and aromatics: think truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, veal roast, braised lamb, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully open. For drinking in its youth, decant gently for 2–3 hours; as it matures and begins to soften, a shorter decant or simply extended time in the glass will be sufficient.

Producer
The Giacosa family has been crafting wine in Piedmont for three generations, with Bruno Giacosa himself widely considered one of Italy’s true winemaking geniuses. Under the banner of Azienda Agricola Falletto, the estate farms around 20 hectares across Serralunga d’Alba, La Morra, and Barbaresco, overseeing every stage from vineyard to bottling in their Neive cellars. Giacosa is renowned for an unwavering commitment to quality, bottling only wines that meet his stringent standards and declassifying anything less, a philosophy that has placed the domaine alongside names like Gaja, Quintarelli, and Valentini in the pantheon of Italian greats. His Barbaresco and Barolo are reference points for the region, celebrated for their purity, typicity, and the unmistakable signature of a master traditionalist.
