Description
The 2019 Bruno Colin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru *La Truffière* is a poised, finely etched white Burgundy from one of the appellation’s most coveted and smallest premier cru sites. Perched high on the slope just beneath the hamlet of Blagny, this vineyard marries tension, purity and depth in a way that Chardonnay lovers treasure. Named after the historic presence of Burgundy truffles in its soils, La Truffière offers a uniquely mineral, almost ethereal expression of Puligny-Montrachet.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous pale gold hue with subtle green reflections, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is refined and precise, with lifted aromas of white flowers (acacia, hawthorn, blossoming citrus), cool stone, and a touch of aniseed and licorice, layered with delicate hints of lemon zest and white peach. As it opens, discreet notes of fine spice and a faint wood-smoke nuance emerge, never overpowering the mineral core.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet supremely elegant Puligny, gliding across the tongue with a silky, almost glossy texture. Flavors of ripe pear, crisp apple and Meyer lemon are interwoven with a deep limestone minerality and a backbone of vibrant, finely tuned acidity. The oak is beautifully integrated, giving gentle accents of toast and light vanilla without masking the terroir. A refined, peppery and lightly woody note lingers on the very long, energetic finish. Still youthful, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will gain further complexity and nuance over 8–15 years, developing more hazelnut, honeyed and truffle-like notes with time in bottle.
Production
Planted in 1952 and 1987, Bruno Colin’s 0.49-hectare holding in Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière lies high on the slope, just below Hameau de Blagny, in one of the commune’s tiniest and most prized terroirs (only around 2.5 hectares in total). The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, thin and stony, ideal for producing intensely mineral Chardonnay with natural tension and precision. The vineyard is worked organically and mechanically, respecting the living soils and avoiding unnecessary chemical inputs. As is traditional in top Burgundy, the grapes are harvested by hand, allowing strict selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. After gentle pressing and fermentation, the wine is aged for about 12 months in 350-liter oak barrels, with 15–20% new oak to add structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit. It then rests for an additional 4–6 months in tank before bottling, allowing the components to harmonize and the wine’s remarkable purity and definition to shine.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white Burgundy that truly comes alive at the table. Pair it with refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre noisette, or roasted poultry with morels or other wild mushrooms. It also works beautifully with fine veal, truffled dishes, and aged but not overly pungent cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or a mild aged goat cheese. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to let the aromatics fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine unfurl and reveal more of its floral, mineral and spice complexity, especially if enjoyed within the first 3–6 years after the vintage.
Producer
The Colin family has been rooted in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune for generations, with a long history of crafting wines that reflect the region’s most celebrated terroirs. Bruno Colin established his own domaine after the division of the family estate, and has steadily built a reputation as one of the leading growers in Chassagne- and Puligny-Montrachet. His holdings span some of the most prestigious appellations of the area, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, with a particular focus on expressing the individuality of each climat. Working largely with old vines and prime parcels, Bruno favors meticulous vineyard work and a sensitive, terroir-driven approach in the cellar, producing wines praised for their elegance, finesse and impeccable balance. Today, Domaine Bruno Colin is considered an important reference for modern yet classically rooted white Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune.
