Description
Bottled in an impressive 1.5L magnum, the 2019 Bouchard Père & Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is one of the pinnacle expressions of white Burgundy. Sourced from the house’s own holdings on the storied hill of Corton, this rare Grand Cru marries power, precision and longevity in a format made for cellaring and special occasions. With rave reviews (94/100 Parker, 96/100 Sutter) and a drinking window extending to 2050 and beyond, it is a collector’s bottle with real pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru shows a luminous, pale gold hue with hints of green at the rim, a classic sign of youthful top-tier Chardonnay from Burgundy. The nose opens with a complex bouquet of ripe orchard fruits—think pear, apple and white peach—interwoven with citrus zest, spring blossoms and a touch of pastry cream. Subtle notes of toasted hazelnut and fine oak are lifted by a clean, chalky minerality.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet strikingly poised, with a concentrated, almost fleshy core of ripe fruit balanced by firm, vibrant acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, lemon curd and baked apple unfold alongside light brioche, almond and a distinctly limestone-driven finish that is long, precise and delicately saline. In magnum, its aging potential is exceptional: while already charming and expressive now, it will gain even more depth, complexity and tertiary notes over the next 10–25+ years.
Production
Corton-Charlemagne is one of Burgundy’s most revered white-wine terroirs, perched on the upper slopes of the Corton hill, where stony, limestone-rich soils and cool exposures produce Chardonnay of remarkable tension and minerality. Bouchard Père & Fils farms its own parcels here, typically using meticulous vineyard work, careful yield control and selective hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. Vinification follows a classic Burgundian approach for Grand Cru white: gentle pressing, fermentation in French oak barrels (with a proportion of new wood for structure and complexity), followed by extended aging on the lees to build texture, nuance and longevity, before the wine is bottled in magnum for even slower, more graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a superb match for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a delicate cream or citrus beurre blanc, turbot or sole meunière, and roasted chicken with morel or truffle sauce. It also shines alongside rich, aged cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or mature Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. For current enjoyment, decanting 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended, particularly with this magnum format, to help the wine open and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest and most respected domaines, with an enviable mosaic of vineyard holdings that includes many of the region’s greatest Premier and Grand Cru sites. Over nearly three centuries, the estate has played a key role in defining the identity of Côte d’Or wines and showcasing the nuances of terroir from village to village. Its Corton-Charlemagne bottling is among the flagship whites in the portfolio, regularly acclaimed by critics and collectors alike for its consistency, elegance and capacity to age, further cementing Bouchard’s reputation as a benchmark producer in Burgundy.
