Description

2019 Bond Quella is one of Napa Valley’s most coveted single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, crafted by the team behind Harlan Estate. Sourced from a singular hillside site, it captures the cool precision and mineral edge that have made Quella a favorite among collectors. The 2019 vintage combines power and refinement, offering a wine that is both immediately seductive and built for the long haul. Quella’s unique selling proposition lies in its striking tension: ripe Napa fruit framed by a distinctly saline, stony character drawn from its rare soils. Compared with Bond’s other crus, Quella is often the most vibrant and lifted, showing clarity rather than sheer opulence. Since its first commercial release in the late 2000s, Quella has helped define a new chapter in Napa’s “grand cru” single-site Cabernet movement, proving that nuance and terroir expression can stand shoulder to shoulder with richness and density.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Bond Quella shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple core with a vibrant, glass-staining rim—youthful and concentrated. Swirl it and you’ll see thick, slow-moving legs that hint at both extract and structure. The nose is refined yet intense: blackcurrant, ripe blueberry and wild blackberry interwoven with violets, graphite, wet river stones and a cool, almost chalky minerality. Subtle layers of cocoa nib, cedar, light tobacco leaf and warm baking spices emerge with air, reflecting time in fine French oak without ever dominating the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but remarkably poised, with a sleek, vertical profile. Dark cassis, black cherry and plum are underscored by notes of dark chocolate, espresso, licorice and a saline, crushed-rock edge that is very much Quella’s signature. The tannins are ultra-fine yet firm, coating but not drying, and the acidity is vibrant, giving the wine lift and precision. The finish is long, cool and focused, lingering with mineral, blue-fruited and floral notes for well over a minute. Aging potential is outstanding: while already impressive with sufficient aeration, the 2019 Quella will reward patience. Expect it to develop additional complexity and tertiary notes—truffle, cigar box, dried flowers and more savory nuances—over the next 15–20+ years, with an optimal drinking window likely from around 2027 onward.

Production
Bond Quella comes from a steep, meticulously farmed hillside vineyard in the eastern hills above St. Helena in Napa Valley. The site sits on the remnants of an ancient riverbed, with light-colored, rocky, and powdery soils rich in tufa and volcanic detritus that naturally limit vigor and yield, concentrating flavor and imbuing the wine with its hallmark mineral tension. The exposure allows for generous sunlight while benefiting from cooling afternoon breezes, extending the growing season and preserving acidity. The vineyard is farmed at an exacting, low-yield level, with careful hand work throughout the season—including cluster thinning and green harvesting—to ensure perfect ripeness of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (with the possibility of tiny fractions of Bordeaux varieties depending on the vintage). Harvest is done by hand in small lots, often with multiple selective passes to pick each block at optimal phenolic maturity. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted berry by berry before a gentle crush. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels (a combination of oak and/or stainless steel), with attentive extraction via pump-overs or punch-downs to achieve depth without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels for around 18–24 months, allowing the structure to knit and the aromatics to gain complexity while preserving the purity and precision that define Quella. The final blend is assembled from the best-performing lots of the vineyard and bottled unfined and unfiltered to retain maximum character.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Bond Quella’s combination of depth, structure and mineral freshness makes it a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Classic pairings include dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, or slow-braised short ribs. The wine’s graphite and savory tones also play beautifully with dishes like duck breast with blackberry reduction, venison with juniper and red wine jus, or truffle-infused beef tartare. For cheese, think aged hard varieties such as Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or a well-matured clothbound cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to showcase both aromatics and texture; avoid serving too warm, which can blur its fine structure. For young vintages like 2019, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2 hours, and up to 3–4 hours if you prefer a more open, layered expression. In large-format glasses (Bordeaux stems), the wine will continue to evolve over the course of an evening, revealing more of its floral and mineral nuance.

Producer
Bond is one of Napa Valley’s most esteemed estates, founded by Bill Harlan as a complementary vision to Harlan Estate: a “first growth” collection of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, each sourced from what the team believes are Napa’s true grand cru sites. Rather than representing a single property, Bond is built on the idea of place—identifying, farming and bottling a handful of exceptional hillside vineyards individually, to reveal their distinct personalities. Since releasing its first wines in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Bond has become a benchmark for terroir-driven Cabernet in Napa, with labels like Quella, Pluribus, Melbury, Vecina and St. Eden widely regarded as some of the region’s most collectible wines. The estate’s meticulous viticulture, obsessive attention to detail in the cellar and philosophy of long-term stewardship have earned consistently high critical acclaim and a devoted global following. Bond’s work has helped cement Napa Valley’s reputation not just for power and ripeness, but for true site expression and world-class, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
