Description

The 2019 Bond Melbury is one of Napa Valley’s modern icons, a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the sculpted power and finesse of Pritchard Hill. Sourced from a steep, terraced site overlooking Lake Hennessey, it marries purity of fruit with an almost classical sense of proportion. This is one of Bond’s five ‘Grand Cru’-level bottlings, produced in tiny quantities and coveted by collectors worldwide for its rarity, precision, and remarkable ability to age.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Melbury typically shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet-purple hue, with vibrant, glass-staining intensity that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe black cherries, mulberries, and blackcurrants unfold alongside notes of plum compote, violet, and crushed graphite, with subtle undertones of baking spices, cedar, and warm earth. On the palate, Melbury tends toward a medium to full-bodied profile—never heavy, but densely packed with finely etched dark fruit. Expect a core of cassis, black cherry, and blue plum framed by ultra-refined tannins and a lively, mineral-driven spine. Hints of cocoa nib, cinnamon toast, and a delicate peppery lift (think Sichuan pepper and dried herbs) add complexity through the mid-palate and into a long, precise, and savory finish. The structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, this 2019 should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years, gaining further nuance and tertiary notes of tobacco, truffle, and forest floor.

Production
Melbury Vineyard sits on the slopes of Pritchard Hill with commanding views over Lake Hennessey—an elevated, hillside terroir known for its rocky, well-drained soils and significant diurnal temperature swings. These conditions naturally limit yields and produce small, intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon berries. Harvest is carried out by hand, with meticulous selection of bunches and berries in the vineyard and at the winery. Bond’s approach to vinification is both precise and restrained: small-lot fermentations, careful extraction to preserve finesse over sheer power, and élevage in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to integrate tannins and add subtle aromatic complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that clearly expresses its site—elegant, mineral, and finely structured—rather than winemaking excess.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Bond Melbury is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison with wild mushrooms, or slow-braised short ribs. It will also work beautifully with truffled dishes, cocoa-rubbed meats, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano, or a mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours will help the wine unfurl its aromatics and soften the young tannins; in its maturity, a gentle 60-minute decant should suffice to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Bond is the vision of H. William Harlan and the team behind the legendary Harlan Estate, conceived as a ‘Grand Cru’ collection of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley’s most compelling hillside sites. Over more than two decades, Bond evaluated dozens of mountain vineyards—over eighty parcels in total—before selecting just five to represent the purest expressions of Napa’s top terroirs, including Melbury. These tiny, meticulously farmed vineyards, typically between 7 and 11 hectares, form the core of Bond’s reputation for precision, longevity, and site-specific character. With the majority of production staying in the United States and strict control over provenance—including individually numbered bottles and a verification system to combat counterfeits—Bond has become one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after and respected producers, standing shoulder to shoulder with the greatest estates in the world.
