Description
The 2019 Beaux Frères Belles Soeurs Cuvée Pinot Noir is a beautifully expressive Willamette Valley Pinot that bridges New World purity with Old World finesse. Sourced from some of Oregon’s most prized vineyard sites and crafted in tiny, carefully selected barrel lots, it is conceived as the elegant, handpicked reserve companion to the iconic Beaux Frères Vineyard bottling. First released in 1996, Belles Soeurs has become a benchmark cuvée for those seeking a refined yet intensely characterful expression of Oregon Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Belles Soeurs shows a medium ruby to ruby‑purple hue, bright and limpid, with a fine, translucent edge that hints at both concentration and finesse. The nose is immediately seductive: wild red and black berries—think raspberry, dark cherry, and boysenberry—are layered with notes of dried rose petals, garrigue herbs, black tea leaf, and a subtle hint of forest floor and truffle. Gentle accents of graphite, cocoa nib, and sweet baking spice from well‑judged French oak add complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, this is a silken, seamless style of Pinot Noir, with a refined yet confident core of dark‑toned fruit. Ripe cherries and wild berries are wrapped in fine, chalky tannins and lifted by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. There’s a graphite‑tinged minerality running through the mid‑palate, giving definition and length, while savory hints of tea, underbrush, and spice linger on a very long, perfumed finish. Already beautifully approachable in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining further aromatic nuance and tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Beaux Frères farms in the cool, hilly reaches of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, drawing on some of the region’s most prestigious terroirs, particularly the Ribbon Ridge area with its well‑drained sandstone and marine sedimentary soils. These sites, coupled with the valley’s long, temperate growing season and cooling Pacific breezes, are ideal for slowly ripening Pinot Noir while preserving brightness and aromatic complexity. The estate has been farmed organically and biodynamically since 2002, and grapes for Belles Soeurs are meticulously hand‑harvested in small batches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Beaux Frères follows a minimally interventionist philosophy: gentle sorting, a high proportion of whole berries and selective whole clusters, native yeast fermentations, and élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest seasoned) to allow texture and complexity to develop without overwhelming the wine’s innate character. The wine is typically bottled unfiltered to preserve purity and nuance.
Food & Serving
The 2019 Belles Soeurs Cuvée is a superb partner to refined yet earthy cuisine. Classic pairings include roast duck breast with a cherry or berry reduction, grilled salmon or tuna, and dishes built around mushrooms—such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or roasted poultry with mushroom jus. It also works beautifully with herb‑roasted pork, game birds, and soft, creamy cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or mild washed‑rind styles. Serve slightly cool at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) to emphasize freshness and aromatic lift. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine’s floral, spicy and forest‑floor notes to fully unfurl.
Producer
Founded by Michael G. Etzel in the late 1980s, Beaux Frères quickly rose to prominence as one of Oregon’s leading Pinot Noir specialists, helped in no small part by Michael’s brother‑in‑law—renowned wine critic Robert Parker—who recognized the estate’s potential early on. Since the first vintage in 1991, Beaux Frères has been dedicated to producing world‑class Pinot Noir from low‑yielding vines and impeccably farmed vineyards that capture the essence of their Willamette Valley origins. The estate has been fully organic and biodynamic since 2002, underscoring a long‑term commitment to soil health and terroir transparency. Today, under the ownership of the Burgundy‑based Maisons & Domaines Henriot (Champagne Henriot, Bouchard Père & Fils, William Fèvre), Beaux Frères continues to be a reference point in Oregon, regularly earning critical acclaim and helping cement the Willamette Valley’s reputation as one of the world’s premier regions for Pinot Noir. The Belles Soeurs Cuvée, launched in 1996 as a companion label and barrel‑selection reserve, exemplifies this legacy of precision, elegance, and site‑driven character.
